Title: Everton v Lincoln FA Cup 3rd Round - Saturday 3pm KO
Post by: D15TIN on January 02, 2019, 09:11:28 PM
Our only chance to save this season is a cup run in this, hopefully a comfortable win on Saturday will see an upturn in form in the league, tough to pick an XI, ideally some need a rest, but also need some confidence.

Tougher game than some might expect this, it's a total free hit for them, theyre flying at the top of League two and bring 5000 fans with them on Saturday, probably fancy themselves with our current form too

Pickford

Coleman
Mina
Zouma
Baines

Gana
Davies
baningime/mccarthy
Lookman
Bernard

Tosun/DCL

Gomes needs a rest, Digne has played all through Christmas, Sigurdsson and richarlison need a week out, and hopefully rediscover some form in the next league game

We need to win this, and should treat it just as seriously as any premiership game. The last thing we should be doing is massively changing the side. We've made this mistake in the League cup every season for as long as I can remember, and it never works for us.

Strongest team out unless anyone is seriously fatigued or injured.

Most of the first 11 look fatigued at the moment.

He’ll make changes and we’ll go out.
I don't think he can really afford to now with the form were in, Stekelenburg in goal would be a disaster - but I am unfortunately expecting him to start, we'd learn more from Virginia getting a start

Whatís our strongest team then? Because to me we donít have one so any kind of rotation is welcome.

If silva has players in this squad who canít perform against Lincoln then they shouldnít be here.

Whatever side we put out will be better than Lincolnís so no excuses really.

I think some of the guys do need a rest. We should have more than enough to get past Lincoln with ease, and its important to rotate after a very tough Xmas period.

Gomes, Siggy, Coleman, Digne or Richarlison should not play. They need to be rested for tougher games ahead, and they all have able replacements.

Pickford

Kenny
Mina
Zouma
Baines

Walcott
Davies
Gana
Bernard

Tosun
DCL

I think he'll bring in the likes of Davies and Schneiderlin, possibly give McCarthy a run out at some point, start Tosun and keep Kenny in as well.

We 'should' be able to make 11 changes and comfortably still win but it's the cup against lower league opposition so it's there for us to fuck up.

These will come here full of confidence, a noisy travelling set of fans and knowing we're on our arses confidence-wise. They'll run straight through players like Schneiderlin, who'll be terrified of making a mistake. I don't think this will be an easy game at all.

..............didn't realise they are top of their league. Won 15 out of 25 games this season they have the winning habit albeit at a lower level. Can't under estimate these Imps.

Balls to resting players. After Keane's comments I'd make him play twice a week just so he sees what tired actually feels like

Play the strongest team and smash them before we get back to playing Premier league teams and losing

I asked the same question a little while back. From memory I think he's coming back form an injury but should be available any time now. He's been out for a while though so may go into the reserves to begin with, rather than joining the first team squad right away.

FA Cup has to be the priority now. The league is irrelevant almost as we won't get relegated and we won't qualify for Europe.

I'll be pissed off if any FA Cup game we field a weakened side and go out

I guess at the same it is massively debatable what the strongest side is. Pickford is well below par at the moment, no one looks like they know how to defend and possibly Digne is the only one in the side on merit

Your last sentence really is the crux of the dilemma, what would be a weakend side ? would an exhausted Keane or Gomes or a shaky Pickford and an off form Walcott be first choice over Jagielka, McCarthy, Schneiderlin, Stek, Davies ? Reckon Silva is dammned if he does, dammned if he doesnít.

Not sure if itís true but I heard that some second choice keepers have it in their contracts that they play cup games ? Plus the fact that the young lad has never been on the bench even suggests that Silva still rates Stek over him.

Come on, it's not impossible.

We shouldn't expect to win it but as long as there's a favourable draw (i.e. top teams going out) then there's little reason to think a team in our position can't win the FA Cup.

If we go out to the likes of Chelsea then I'm really not bothered, if's when you lose to teams like Mark Hughes' Southampton at home that annoys me.

Love a cup run more than anything and I will be extremely fucking pissed off if we can’t get past these at home!

But, it’s impossible I’m afraid.

Last decade 1 FA cup has been won by a team outside the big 6.

If you go back 30 years that increases to 3 teams not in the big 6, one of which being us.

I’m sorry but I don’t see it at all. I would absolutely LOVE it, but hand on heart I don’t think it will happen unless there is some kind of freak run or results.

Yeah, I'm afraid the "magic" is gone.  RM's Wigan isn't walking through that door.

Priority has to be League play and laying the foundation for next season.  Whatever Marco does in pursuit of long-term goals, I will support.

Same here. Iíd rest Digne, Gomes and Walcott but the rest of the first team should start - get a lead in the game and then rest some after the first half in an ideal world.
Would like to see Davies , Baines and lookman in

I think that line-up's pretty sensible. Keane getting a day off along with Lucas Digne is about right. I'd like to see McCarthy get some time on the pitch to see where he is, fitness and recovery wise. If we don't win this, Marco will start to have serious questions asked of him. And justifiably. :)

plus, football is a business, and so what if a player expresses views about furthering their career?  I assure you that EVERYONE on the pitch and on the touchline puts their career interests first.  That's why a Lucas Digne ended up here, after all.

I understand "mild annoyance" but anything beyond that is baffling.

With the exception of a nervy 15 minutes after they scored that wasnít as bad as some are making out.
We had a huge amount of possession and they had their whole team defending and defending well. Was never going to be an easy game against these. Some better final balls and weíd have won more comfortably.
Also donít think Gomes was bad at all, a couple of very wayward passes that couldíve unlocked them but at least he tries them. By no means a sparkling performance but no way a shocker either.
74% possession and 18 shots show how dominant we were. We just werenít clinical.

Alternatively:

A Southampton side under a new manager who has them well drilled, who just held Chelsea to a point at home.

A free scoring Bournemouth side who just turned the corner by coming back from 2-0 down to Watford, with one of the leagues most in-form strikers.

The one random thing that bothered me, we don't get enough players into the box a lot of the time. Toward the very end we did better on that as it got a little more frenetic, but there were quite a few times we went to cross the ball and stopped because there was perhaps just Tosun surrounded by 4 defenders.

Zouma doesnít seem to read the ball too well all the time.

As a result he gets caught under the flight or bounce, or gets slightly out of shape/ off balance making him easy to nudge aside.

His touch canít be worse than DCLís lately.

I dunno, he spends enough time during games as the furthest man forward, at least if he was the #9 we could either get another midfielder on the field, or have a three behind him of Richarlison, Bernard and Lookman/Walcott

Yeah I suppose, but if we played 3 behind it wouldnít be any different from now, other than if Bernard was at 10 but then theyíd probably get in each otherís way a bit.

In reality another midfielder would probably just mean Davies and say Richarlison and Walcott wide

Midfield balance behind (and prob needs different players to what we have) will force a decision on Sig.

Just got in from the game , this was just another inept spineless performance from Everton. We scraped past a Fourth Division team from 1960.

Lost count of the amount of times we were in decent positions out wide but only had one in the box

Gana really fucked up with about ten minutes to go when Tosun made a great timed run and had only the goalie to beat but Gana put it out wide.

Mina's enthusiasm seems to have dulled a bit, hope his dip isn't him regretting, same with Gomes.

I think we need to pick 2 of the 3 and stick with them for a bit. All this chopping and changing is good for no man.
