Title: Everton v Chelsea Sunday 17th March 4.30pm
Post by: Gash on March 14, 2019, 01:42:55 AM
What a twat of a kick off time, as if 4pm on a Sunday isn't bad enough. It's not like there's three games on but the early game isn't until 2.15pm for some reason.

4-30 so it's virtually a night match and I can't normally get to night matches . But I'm all set for this one and looking forward to it in a masochistic sort of way.

Well! 0-0 away! Come on lads. I don't know about what you lot think, but it's getting on my tits. I still go with Marco. Six months into next season? Unless, we are anywhere close to the EFC, I know? Then he hasn't got it for us.

Its because the early early game was due to be Spurs/Palace but Palace are at Watford in the early cup game on Saturday instead, Brighton/Millwall is the early TV game on Sunday before Fulham/RS and our game

..............maybe so but I doubt he'll ever get a genuine injury the way he strolls about for Chelsea now .He seems to get himself in the ideal position so as not to receive a pass.  The inclusion of him and Keane in the England squad is quite baffling to me.

Haven't really got any midfielders with good creative passing I don't think, and while Ross is actually being less creative now than he was with us, he plays for Chelsea so yano.

Keane - mixed bag of a year but out of him, Mawson, yer man with the big head, (not ake as he's Dutch lol) dunk? I dunno. I think he's shite but hes had his best form with us.

Against Fulham a couple of weeks ago when they scored their second he managed to run the length of the pitch while successfully managing to run away from the ball.

That's roughly 7x as many as Andre Gomes.

............I don't think he's shite but he seems to be a peripheral figure at Chelsea .He's a neat and tidy player now  ,doesn't try to do much and I'm only half joking when I say he seems to keep out of the way .Chelsea have more creative players so he's not under the pressure he was here.
Anyway he was an unused sub last night so probably start on Sunday. I didn't like the way he left but I don't bear any grudges either.

He had spell in October when he scored three goals and three assists and the media started commenting about how great he was now that he was playing for a top manager and with top players. Since then he's scored no goals in the league, a couple against Malmo in Europe, got one assist and one yellow card. Weird really, because we all thought he was a confidence player yet since October when you'd think he'd be buzzing it's all gone a bit pear shaped again.

He's just a very peaky player isn't he.

Ultimately I think getting rid was the right thing to do. Would walk into our midfield of course but you can't build a side around someone like that, don't know if you're getting Ballack or Ballsack.

If he's here beyond the summer we need a way of using him.

Worry about his lack of pace and mobility in that position but yano, worth a go at some point, maybe not v these though.

Thought about using him how we used Naismith as a false 9 like against Arsenal at Goodison 3-0 and Chelsea 3-1.  Not to say would be the same but I remember Lukaku and Mirallas breaking at pace on the flanks and Naismith arriving late to score in a 4-3-3.

I would imagine Lookman would also get more joy in a 4-3-3, knowing we have three players sitting and helping full backs etc.

He was a midfielder who could carry the ball forwards, last season and this, we don't have that person.

we need players like him (or him!) who can keep the ball and get it away from our goal.

albeit he wasn't at his best, but still  I don't know anyone else in our team atm, who can carry the ball up the pitch, (please don't say Richarlison) Gomes can but he plays deeper and doesn't burst forwards like Barkley did.

I don't love Andre gomes but he does progress the ball. He's not as creative with it as I wish he was but he can dribble or pass up the pitch very well when he wants.

We're never going to see the Sigurdsson deep or in the false 9 unfortunately.

Will be 4231 probably Gomes and Gueye but maybe Schneiderlin instead of Gomes.

Bernard Sig Richarlison behind DCL, sit tight and try and break.

I think he's generally got the set up right against the big boys, but we never seem to get a result unfortunately.

Me too. Makes too many needless fouls. Not sure if that is because he hasn't had game time or if he just is too eager to finally be playing again and wants to make an impact.

Were utterly lethargic, just waiting for Chelsea to score.

Barkley is running rings around Gomes and Gueye

I think what looks like "no fight" is actually just "no midfield."

We need a third body in there to get a foothold.

Especially with the way Chelsea tuck in their wingers, its 2 vs 5 at times

Just bin Silva, appoint Arteta, get a bit of excitement back into the club and look forward to the summer.

Hes a forward and can score even with a poor game (eg last week).

The debate comes up as were not controlling games enough therefore providing loads of chances for a wide forward in open plan.

He is very good at sniffing out chances too.

Great performance and result in the second half. Cant remember the last time we actually put a full 90 performance together though.

Oh yeah and fuck Sigurdsson off the pens please.

I like Cahills passion for Everton, and hes saying a lot of good things, but stating that Richarlison is an out and out striker and needs to be played there all the time is just insane
There might be a case in the future to re visit that experiment, could be it was too much too soon for him this year, only young, new club and all that, you never know down the line.

Until Mirallas stole that pen off Baines we had about 20 years of pretty much guaranteed goals from pens.

Been down at 50% since.

I think he has a point tbh.

Hes a predator in the six yard box and loses the ball too much when hes played out wide.

Think hes a lot better off the right than the left though.

I reckon hell end up as a centre forward in years to come. Play him there in the right team and he bags 20 a season

Silva earnt his crust today. Made tactical tweaks at halftime moving us further up the pitch, and clearly put the fire into the boys. Also liked his sub taking off Gomes for Schneiderlin.

We are such a difficult team to predict at the moment. The two halves were like night and day again (same as Newcastle but opposite halves).

At least we seem to be playing some effective football, but needs to be more consistent throughout the game, and not just one half here and another there.

DCL superb up top and looking like he has matured over the past few months. Also impressed with Pickford - made saves where necessary and made it look simple today - more of the same please

He's a weird player, there's a bit of the Shane longs about him (obviously more talented) in that he can play anywhere but he never seems that consistent anywhere. Bags though regular

I didn't watch the game, how did Mina play? How did he look alongside Keane?

First 5-10 minutes, all over the shop and should have conceded.  After that... very steady. Pickford's saves were mostly from range as Mina and Keane kept the 6-yd box pretty clear (and when they didn't, blocked it themselves)

(hangs head ) ....but a cracking game to watch and a lot of improved performances all round from keeper to DCL Rich ,Bernards tireless efforts Guaye getting stuck right in  even Scneids again solid ....and a shout to Mina  quietly effective and can actually header a fucking ball. ...well played blues ....and a hat tip to Silva too .

Yes, but the reasons hes able to, and in the right condition to sniff out these chances, is that he isnt being battered by CBs for 95 minutes a game, and he can ghost into these areas from initial wide positions or by roaming, which he cant do if hes being played as the fulcrum

I remember him being abysmal as our CF for his entire time there apart from Leicester away and Brighton at home, and even large swathes of those two games he was still outmuscled and outplayed.

Hes been good lately because he isnt being kicked around by two big CBs for the entire game, and he can ghost into dangerous positions from wide areas.

Just finished watching, as bad as the first half was, the second was brilliant.

Still not convinced we are anything better than 8th in this league, but its good to finally beat a 'top 6' team again.

shite first half that, boss second half

shite police at the divide again, but did enjoy the prolonged eye contact one bearded officer gave me for most of the second half - even gave him a little rub on my way out and winked as I said I'd see him later.  the big tease never gave me his number though.

boss atmosphere when we got going, and loved seeing Barkley grab the badge as if he cares about anything outside his own head.

good for Richarlison to get on the scoresheet again, and to get on with his game for once - it paid off, so hopefully he'll carry on.

Gomes doesn't get me the feels like my bizzie bestie does anymore though.  Gutted.

loved a bit of Pickford's tiny arms making some wonderful saves too.

What a weird game. At half time we were wondering if that was the worst we'd seen this season. By the end we were contemplating the best 45 minutes of the season so far. You could hear a pin drop at times in the first half, the place was swinging in the second half. Madness.

Pickford looked confident. The back 4 were excellent in the 2nd half, Seamus is getting his mojo back but his final ball still leaves a lot to be desired. Mina and Keane were solid and we didn't look vulnerable on set-pieces (when was the last time that happened?) and we carried a threat of our own. Midfield looked much better on the front foot after having spent the first half watching Chelsea play keep ball. Bernard and Richarlison looked a threat and DCL had a very good 90 mins, worked himself into the ground even though isolated in the first half.

Is this the start of the future?

More like it 2nd half but I wont get carried away until we put in regular 90 minute performances like that.

There's no excuse for not showing that desire and focus every game.

Again shows how fragile and changeable our confidence has been this season. When we are feeling good and the players are on it, we're a match for anyone but that confidence seems so fragile and brittle sometimes.

Still, it's another good indication that Silva will play to beat the big teams and that we have the capability to do that more often than we have in recent times. Just need to find a more consistent level from week to week, which seems difficult with this group of players.

As well as bringing in more talent, we need to bring in the right personalities in the summer to give a more robust quality to the squad.

Its about beating the Newcastles and West Hams with ease that I want. We have to deal with that first and then move on to trying to crack the top 6.

They probably are the better partnership, but weve got nothing to play for and Zouma wont be here next season. Id rather see if Keane and Mina can form a decent CB pairing.

We know Bernard is better on the left and has a good partnership with Digne, not sure why it took until half time to change that around.
