Arsenal v Everton
Emirates Stadium (Capacity - 60, 361)
Sunday 8th December 16:00
Premier League match 15

Arsenal's last 5 domestic matches 2013/2014:

Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool (Cazorla, Ramsey)
Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal
Arsenal 2-0 Southampton (Giroud x2)
Cardiff 0-3 Arsenal (Ramsey x2, Flamini)
Arsenal 2-0 Hull (Bendtner, Ozil)

Everton's last 5 domestic matches 2013/2014:

Everton 0-0 Tottenham
Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton
Everton 3-3 Liverpool (Mirallas, Lukaku x2)
Everton 4-0 Stoke (Deulofeu, Coleman, Oviedo, Lukaku)
Manchester United 0-1 Everton (Oviedo)

Arsenal

Arsenal secured a routine 2-0 win over Hull City on Wednesday night as a couple of first team players were rested to the bench such as Gibbs, Arteta and Giroud. This is Arsenal's 5th clean sheet in their last 6 matches as the Gunners show no signs of slowing down their title charge despite defeat at Old Trafford a few weeks ago.

There are still a few pundits and footballing fan's who doubt that Arsenal are serious title contenders in spite of their strong start to the season. Going into this top 7 clash, Arsenal have only played Tottenham at home, Liverpool at home and Manchester United at Old Trafford from last year's top 7 in their opening 14 games so perhaps the talk of a title challenge is premature. Having said that, you can only beat what's in front of you and 6 points is a solid return from those fixtures.

Substituting Wigan, Reading and QPR with Cardiff, Crystal Palace and Hull, the above table shows how these teams have gotten on against some of the 'lesser'teams in the league. Aston Villa on the opening day of the season remains Arsenal's only dropped points against last season's bottom half teams. Maintain that sort of standard and Arsenal could gain 50 points just from teams in the bottom half this season.

Possible Line ups

(http://i.picresize.com/images/2013/12/04/KfGrZ.png) (http://i.picresize.com/images/2013/12/04/IuTHh.png)

Everton

Everton are looking break back to back unwanted records as they head to the Emirates on Sunday. Bryan Oviedo's dramatic late winner ended Everton's 21 year drought at Old Trafford and travels to the red side of North London haven't been prosperous in the Premier League era either as it's 17 years since Everton beat Arsenal away in the Premier League. Confidence will be high with just one defeat in the league this year which is the lowest of any side.

Everton have accumulated the most clean sheets this season having only conceded in 6 of their 14 Premier League games, however only half of these have been wins. Despite the positive style of play from both sides, there's plenty of signs to point towards a game of few goals given both team's defensive abilities this season.

Stats and Injuries

Arsenal will be without long term injuries Abou Diaby and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain whilst Podolski is also unlikely to be fit in time. Everton will likely be without Leighton Baines along with long term injuries Darron Gibson and Arouna Kone

This will be the 200th meeting between the two sides.

Not sure what to expect here.
Hope we just play to win as we did at Old Trafford and come away with a point or 3. :)

1996 Arsenal vs Everton 1-2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da-Fj1NmJdk#ws)

This is the last time we beat Arsenal away.  Never beaten them at The Emirates

I'm hoping me posting the vid of our last win at United in the last matchday thread had a positive effect so I am trying to replicate that here by once again dipping into Sir Stealths Video Vault

Interesting side story for this will be Ozil v Barry given what happened in Germany. Sure he'll want to put in a commanding performance coming off the OT win too where I thought he was exceptional.

Mirallas Barkley Deulofeu just looks beautiful on the page! Can't help but feel its overly attacking against a side that can keep the ball better than anyone but then I'm just going to let RM work his positive magic and let Arsenal worry about us instead for a change.

It is too attacking in the sense that they're all similar players who like to get the ball and run with it.

Unless Pienaar is completely knackered or has a knock there's no reason not to play him.

Overall though, I'm looking forward to this one.

I'd rather it wasn't straight on the back of the Utd game but I do think they'll be exposed to our counter attacks so if we can improve in how clinical we are in these situations I can definitely see us scoring.

If it's an open game though, will Arsenal be more ruthless than Utd were?

Was thinking rotation, might be a big ask to start 3 games in a week. If Deulofeu starts then himself, Mirallas, Barkley and Pienaar will have started 2 games each this week.

3 games in 8 days is a big ask if you ask me. He looked pretty tired to me in the second half last night as well.

By the way how narrow does their team look with Wilshere and Cazorla on the wings? We really need our full backs involved as much as possible.

Agreed. And look at how involved Deulofeu was within minutes of coming on last night. Should of scored and gave them all manner of problems.

Pinning back their full backs with pace on both flanks gives us the best possible chance of beating them. We're full of confidence just now, lets use that.

Playing Pienaar as it's the "safe" option is what Moyes would have done. We're better than that now. We won the game last night by taking the game to Utd. Lets do the same here.

Shogun your matchday previews are getting better and better mate, keep up the great work it's very much appreciated

As for the game, we need our strongest available team out. This really isn't the sort of game to rest or rotate players, if we win this the message will be loud and clear. There's no doubt that Arsenal will field their strongest side, where probably the most inform team they've faced so far, and Wenger won't want any slip ups. He will realise the media are just waiting for one blip so they can write them off, he'll have them right up for it so it's a huge task.

A win would be incredible, but if we get a draw it will still make people sit up and take us more seriously.

No playing Pienaar is the best option as he provides the best link between the midfield and the attacking players.

Too many like minded players can lead to a disjointed attack.

Last night we lost balance with Deulofeu and Mirallas on the pitch. It was only restored when Osman came on to act as a link at the point of the midfield.

Indeed. Would have taken 4 points from Stoke/@ManUtd/@Arsenal if it had been on offer. Now that we're on 6 points, might as well go for the maximum! All of the current top 7, bar Liverpool, are away from home this weekend, so a win at the Emirates could really tighten up the top of the table.

Most likely person to come in for Pienaar would be Osman I would think.

Need someone to help keep possession instead of just running at players.

Yeah although Barkley didn't have the best game, aside from that great first chance for Deulofeu I thought we lost our balance in the midfield when he went off.

Man Utd were noticeably able to get on the front foot for a chunk of time and it took us a while to recover, certainly aided by the introduction of Osman.

Pienaar is so vital to us. Not only his defensive work which is outstanding but also he holds the ball well and never loses possession. Always makes himself available and is a real gem of a player.

he also generally turns it on against Arsenal

It's criminal how under rated he is, all because he doesn't run at players it seems. He makes us tick, everytime he got the ball last night he made it stick and he's always looking for that killer ball. Playing a 3 of Barkley, Mirallas, and Delofew is a massive risk.

I haven't left him out because he isn't good enough. Left him out in case of fatigue.

He's by far our most intelligent player and the only attacking player who can control the tempo of a game from that position. He's also probably the most fouled player in the league.

Really tough to call this one.
With our excellent defensive records a nil nil or one nil either way would be the obvious bet.
If either team scores early though it could really open things up and finish high scoring.
Can't see us losing at the moment but then you'd have to say the same about arsenal. Need another massive game from Barry though Sunday I think

1-1 feels about right, and that would honestly be a great result for us. Arsenal haven't dropped points at home since the opening day defeat by Villa. Wouldn't be surprised for us to nick a goal on the break around the half-hour mark, with Arsenal pressure resulting in an equalizer in the final 15.

However, it's entirely possible we could be treated to another game in the vein of the United match, where both teams have a few chances, and we are the ones to capitalize on the one true opportunity.

This why I don't like Arsenal. They think they're entitled to play their football and that any attempt to stop them is against the rules. The players think it too. They're nearly as bad as Barca for trying to referee the game. Noticed last season against us and then against Man Utd.

Yeah I used to like Arsenal but recently, certainly since they moved to the Emirates (I don't think it's connected!) they've become really annoying for things like that.

I guess it's the frustration of not winning like they had done.

Anyway, I've really wanted to beat them.

This why I don't like Arsenal. They think they're entitled to play their football and that any attempt to stop them is against the rules. The players think it too. They're nearly as bad as Barca for trying to referee the game. Noticed last season against us and then against Man Utd.

Have you seen it on here though? We think we can beat anyone and they're top of the league so of course they'll be thinking the same way it is a home game after all.

I think Osman will come in for Barkley so we retain the ball a little better. I don't think Deulofeu will start.

Fair enough they are confident. They are the favourites. It's just that their players and fans view any attempt to stifle their gameplan  as 'kicking them off the pitch' and that they and Saint Arsene are above such vulgarities. It's hypocritical, especially when Wilshere charges around the pitch like an idiot, leaving the boot in but when they're on the end of they're up in arms at the ref.

I just read the whole thing and some of them are twats as you'd expect on any forum really, one thing I found funny was someone saying that were a decent team but Martinez has us punching above our weight. How many managers are we going to have that keep us doing better than expected before teams just realise were actually good.

Hopefully they'll realise tomorrow after we beat them haha!

Some bad shouts in there though. One of them said something like "as if we'll lose to a team with Gareth Barry in it". Barry came out today and said Arsenal tried to sign him this summer.

Martinez will have the lads believing in themselves now and anything is possible.

Does anyone else hate watching us live on telly?

When I'm at the match I'm much less nervous throughout the game, until it gets late on and we're hanging on etc. Watching it on telly though I'm on the edge of my seat the whole match and my heart races as though it's the 90 minute all game!

Last game Roberto said he would rather be the better team and lose than a smash and grab win. Because its not the end of the world if we lose, if we play the better football. Because thats the way he is pushing us, to be able to dominate the game and WIN.

I for one wont be too upset if we lose, as long as we play with no fear and take the game to them. Which im confident we will do.

They're just crying cunts. It was the same last season when they weren't getting all the play their way they try and influence the ref and want bookings for every foul given against them. Webb booked Barry on the back of that.

Deserved point. It's so refreshing to see us have a go against the so called bigger clubs, and earn four points out of six away from home against two sides we would have no doubt lost to last season. Can we go until the end of the year with our current unbeaten run in tact? I wouldn't put it past us the way that we're playing.

Great week that. Let's just hope we don't fall asleep against the teams we should be beating. Great performance again there with tons of belief in the side. We look very good going forward although the final pass was lacking at times today.

2 points lost.

On a serious note........BBC website: Martinez is such a talented manager. With PSG waiting in the wings could he be in the home dugout at the Emirates next year?

Can't make it up. Great game. One we most probably could have won with a bit of luck but I'll take the point. Real good to be an Evertonian at all times but these last few weeks have been most excellent dude.

RMs the real deal like.

Four points from those two games is a very good week.

If anyone told you a few weeks ago that we'd get 4 points from these two games you would have laughed.

If they told you that you'd be disappointed we did not get all 6 you would have had them checked by a shrink.

Distin must be the most under rated players in the league. How he never got capped by France is a mystery. Barkley is superb on the ball until it comes to a pass in the final third. He just cant seem to get his decision making right on whether to play to feet or to slip it through. Massive potential but wastes a lot of ball

I'm loving the Everton that Martinez is shaping. Exciting, brave, fearless.
To be leaving the Emirates with a point, having dictated the play and for large parts out classed Arsenal - yet feeling disappointed to have not won. That's some change around Roberto and I like it!

Great interview from RM, stressing our control and dominance, and how we made Arsenal end up playing it long to Giroud (same as we did with Utd). What a man!

Also loving John Collins in the Sky studio. Not coming out with any of this 'spirit, determination, plucky upstart' shit. Basically telling the media that we're actually a fucking good team, and if you watch us you might realise that.

Cue the 'everton were very resilient' shouts from the media. Tyler was gutted when he seen the possession was 50-50 before after banging on about how dominant arsenal were on the ball.

We seem to slowly become the footballer's football team though: Merson, Neville and probably more and more ex-pros are loving us.

Wow, thanks for the hugs, i needed them! Im exhausted after that. I have never seen us play this way before and it feels strange to support a team with so much potential. The mindset that we will fuck up next week against such a poor side is still there, but not as strong; the psychology of the team is totally different under Roberto and i doubt the word 'Bottlers' will ever be mentioned about the team again.

Says a lot that im 10% disapointed with a draw haha if only Lukaku had connected better at the end...but then they hit the bar so i bet they are thinking the same!

Coleman was top form, as was Howard, so i can forget the idea that the beard gave him magical powers :P

I hope to God that Barkleys decision making gets better soon, he needs to work on it. No doubt he is incredibly special, but he has cost us a lot of chances with very poor passes or holding on too long. I just hope it gets sorted out soon and there will be no stopping him or us.

On Wednesday the lasting memory of the match against Manu was our two fullbacks in their box in the last 5 mins, with the game at 0-0. This week it was Arsene Wenger dragging off his whole midfield and replacing them, cos they were...Tired. How many teams outpass Arsenal at the Emirates? Who would you prefer now Jack Wiltshire or Ross Barkley ?

TBH in the prediction thread I put us down for a loss, simply because we played United away and then had to travel up to Arsenal and play them away, in te space of four days. Arsenal played Hull at home and rested 5 players.

And for Wenger to do what he did is the highest compliment he can give us. If we can get a bit of luck with the injuries imo we can get top 4 . Loving watching us at the moment.

If we can take something like 16-18 points from our next 21 then we will have an excellent chance of top 4 this season.

If we can bring the likes of City, Utd and Arsenal back to our place in the 2nd half of the season in the same kind of form we are now, well, I don't dare think what might be possible.

The speed at which we have taken on board the new manager's ideas is the most encouraging thing. I didn't think we would see such confidence on the ball for a good while. if you watch his old footage, scoring goals from weird and unusual angles is one of his aces in the pocket. some of his free kicks/tight finishes demonstrate a kind of technique with the ball that is truly special. doubly so that he can reproduce it in the premier league...away...against arsenal...who are top of the league.

Had to go out so I listened to the last 20 mins of the match on the car radio.

Arsenal made 3 substitutions and fat shite Alan Green, (Eamon Holmes' sister in drag), said Wenger was possibly resting them for the Napoli game.

IT WAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THE EVERTON BOYS BOSSED THEM IN MIDFIELD.

That Alan Green is a proper biased cunt who looks a bit like Baron Green Back from Dangermouse.

I was listening to the 1st 35 mins on Radio 5 and it sounded like we were playing shit. I then watched the games on a stream to hear Gary Neville waxing lyrical about our dominance of the game.

Total fucking gobshite.

Understand why people want to hilight Barkley for mom but he's still a work in progress for me. Infuriating at times he can do things that make him stand out on the pitch and then misplace the most simple of passes, it will come but he's still a few basic things to learn. He wasn't the main reason why we took a point today. Love watching him but, deulofeu... had so much faith that he'd make something happen from his 10 minutes on the pitch, the lad just demands the spotlight. That moment of brilliance just keeps it all going. Important moment in our season I think, soon as that drops and saw he was on the ball I thought, he'll make something happen.

I agree. But patience is a virtue. Give him 50 more games, which won't take long now he's established himself, and we'll have a serious player on our hands. The upside of him making his mistakes is that it's going to help him become a better player sooner

As Paul Merson was saying, it's a huge deal to play Ross in that position at 20 years old. And it's perfect that he can rotate with Leon Osman as neither are going to pull a tantrum.

Yeah Martinez has shown a faith in him which Moyes didn't and he's repaid it so far. Had some poor games but he's been responded well each time. And if he needs taking out of the firing line we've got the options to do it. It's a good situation for the team and for him.

Can believe this shite from Wenger... got zero respect for him after this...

Arsene Wenger accused Everton of dirty tricks after the Toffees hit back to hold the league leaders in a hugely-entertaining game at the Emirates.

Everton backed up their 1-0 win at Manchester United in midweek with another impressive display, controlling the first half, but Wenger felt Roberto Martinez’s men relied a little too much on a physical and cynical approach.

‘When we got out of the pressure and got into the passing, they stopped us every single time with a foul,’ he said.

‘To just make a foul without being punished by the referee is a huge advantage because after that you play ten against ten in one half again.’

Wenger ?  No, :wanker:

What a result, I wasn't sure how far we could go this season but after watching that performance I think we can get top 4 if we can keep that standard of play. I think January is so important we must strengthen, I think a striker and cm is priority if lukaku gets injured we're in trouble, i hope kenwright gets the wallet out and I'm sure bobby will spend wisely he hasnt put a foot wrong yet.

Knew he would have something to say like this. He could have complimented us for coming to his ground and controlling the game for long periods, but he's always been a sore loser.

Their fans, players and manager are almost like those of Barcelona in terms of thinking they are entitled to play their football and that any attempt to stop them is against the rules. Wilshere is the worst, he thinks he's above being tackled.

Just on twitter mate, here's a few selections I can be arsed finding...

@vinayak_afc: Some very angry Liverpool fans in my mentions. Everton were the better side and we defeated you lot. SIT DOWN.

@philmcnulty: Praise indeed from Arsenal's Arteta: "Everton are the best side we have faced this season in the Premier League." Testimony to Martinez.

@philmcnulty: @Fan_of_LFC Getting lots of responses from Liverpool fans to that. Bit odd.

@nick14b: @philmcnulty i'm sure Arteta used to play for Everton eh

@THT1878: Final thing , just seen a LFC fan saying we aren't a good side and he doesn't know how we are up there ! Exactly how I feel bout LFC ! Hmm

They just don't like the fact we're better than them. It may have just opened the medias eyes to how good we are too.

It's fucking criminal some of the shit they say about us.

They should start focusing on Jags bringing it out from the back, or Tim Howards improved distribution, or our ability to dictate a game, or how dangerous we are on the counter attack. These are things that Martinez has changed, not the full backs.

thought the analysis was good on motd tonight to be honest.  I see us as contenders for the top 4 and I'm made up were playing really attractive football.  At the start of the season I thought top 10 finish would be satisfactory for Martinez' first season.  He has altered all of our expectations now but I think a league title is at least a season or two off!

Not sure what can be done to change their minds. They are idiots. Shearer keeps repeating that Arsenal aren't contenders despite them being the best team so far. And Hansen just refuses to justify his opinions. He's only just realised today that Mertesacker and Koscielny are a good pairing. It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but its get slightly infuriating when week in week out it's the same old big club bias.

They're job is to give their opinion, and that's all it is, one person's opinion.

I tend to think we as fans read far too much into something that gets said about the opposition as well. It's very much a selective hearing thing, we only hear good things said about the opposition and go off on one when something is said, while totally ignoring/forgetting/not hearing anything good said about us.

The "top four" will always be the big draw because that's where the money is for the media to report on unfortunately. It won't change especially since the arrival of the Premier League and anything before that tends to be forgotten about. I've just got to the stage I don't see the point in moaning about it, in fact the people moaning about it bores me more than the media's lack of coverage.

Title: Re: Arsenal v Everton
Post by: ally2 on December 09, 2013, 05:42:52 AM
The top four doesn't really exist anymore. It used to be the four biggest clubs and best clubs. Liverpool and Spurs are massive clubs but not too four. We are probably not 'big' enough.

What I like about is is that Moyes gave us credibility, but Martinez is giving like-ability. We generally have a bit of class about us, don't get bailed out by billionaires yet play good football and are doing well. This is a situation in which I couldn't wish for any more.

Being somewhat a sad old man.......I always take a look at the opponents fans forums after our games and the Arsenal fans almost to a man thought Everton were the best team they have faced this season --- it matters not one iota what Danny Mills and Hanson say, "those that know do in fact know"

The longer we stay below the radar, the better IMO.

They're job is to give their opinion, and that's all it is, one person's opinion.

I think a distinction has to be made here. Pundits are paid to give an opinion and that's fine. Most of them seem to have taken to us anyway.

But journalists aren't paid for their opinions, they're paid to report on or to sum up what happens on the pitch for those who can't see it. And when they practically misrepresent games, that can be infuriating. Although they're hardly worth wasting bile on in the big scheme of things.

But they did say the same thing, ffs. Let's not be paranoid about things that didn't even happen.

It's the journos that wind me up the most. Their ratings have me baffled.

Brilliant performance, fully deserving of at least a point. Deulofeu's goal was a peach and his introduction seemed to finally get Lukaku going after flitting in and out of the game up to that point. Barry and McCarthy are really gelling as a partnership, can't see any reason to not sign GB on a permanent deal in the summer. The Arsenal players and fans aren't half whinging cunts though, particularly with the Lukaku/Koscienly incident in the first half. Still from 3 potentially difficult games post derby we have ended up with 7 points. Maximum points from the next 4 games will set us up nicely for the new year

In fairness, I'm just reading through the Guardian's comments section from the game, and we're getting massively praised by fans of Arsenal, City, Spurs, Chelsea and other neutrals all the way through. Not many reds on there weirdly.

Y'know what you're right. As we say " we don't care what the red shite say"  so ill take a leaf from that and not give a toss what anyone says or doesn't say if we know weve played good then thats all that matters. Im just gutted I only saw some measly highlights.

Yes but he's been lucky with cards on other occasions this season, so can't really grumble.

Last time we won the league (86-87) we had 3 fewer points than we do now after 15 games. IT'S ON!*

* It's not really.

Is it just me who has genuine passionate hatred of arsenal? Their players dive relentlessly, but moan for everything. There fans cry at everything. And wenger is just a bitter sour old man. I dont even like arteta any more! and i didnt think that was possible!

I didn't even think it was a foul, let alone a booking.  Just finished watching off the DVR.

I thought coming into the game that these were very possibly the two best teams in the Prem, and I'm almost sure that's the case now.

It's just Wenger who I really dislike intensely. His ability as a manager is not in question but he is the most ungracious and miserable person I can remember in football. His "dirty Everton" quote in the Metro is typical of the bullshine he often uses after he's been tactically taken to the cleaners by an opposition coach and he can't face the fact that he's been bested. We were superior than his team in the possession and passing game on their own pitch today .
He would have gained more respect from everyone if he'd have given us some credit for something everybody witnessed . A sad and bitter old man .. No wonder their "fans?" are so bad

I was praising him before the game for some nice things he said about us, but you're right, he's almost never gracious after the game. What a ridiculous thing to talk about us being overly physical when they couldn't get the ball off us for large periods. We did commit some tactical fouls at times but none of them dirty, and they did exactly the same to us in a number of advanced positions. A few of theirs weren't even called, a couple on Pienaar and the one on Lukaku out wide when he had his man one-v-one spring to mind. Barkley was also consistently fouled in the spaces 10-15 yards outside of their box.

I know Collins played for us but I've never been convinced that he really took to Everton but maybe that's wrong.

As much as anything, John Collins was a lovely footballer, with a peach of a left peg, and he's always appreciated football played a certain way. I'm sure he does have some affection for us, judging by the tone in his voice today, but he seemed to be largely responding to the football that we served up. And we served it up alright.

Collins was an Everton fan long before he signed for us, I seem to remember. That's part of the reason we were constantly linked with making a move (like Speed and now Holtby at Spurs).

Try to like Arsenal but can't as they're a shower of girly prima-donnas with a wannabe hardman in Wilshere & a bitter suck a lemon for a manager. Would have been righteous if we'd banged another one in in the last minute to give their fans something else to stamp their feet & cry about & Martin Tyler a coronary.

3 points against that lot way sweeter than the 3 from Old Trafford for me like.

To think the fuckers once beat us 6-1!
