How do you play fast, direct, vertical football against a team with 9 players in two lines within 30 yards of their own goal?

You can't.

You can't.

A first step might be to acknowledge that by knocking it around pointlessly at the back isn't going to fool the opposition into coming forward or initiate the possibility that they might suddenly forget their tactical plan. The next step would be to ask your wide players to stretch the pitch. The next step would be to ask for more fluid and dynamic movement from your players so that the opposition are given problems in passing players on.

Of course it would help to practice this in training. It's just that we've had the same problem all season and not learnt anything.

If Lukaku gets out of bed the right side we piss this game. We had more than enough possession in the right areas but the  focal point of our attack was shite.

He seemed to have two Sunderland defenders on him a lot of the time, but he should never have missed that header in the 2nd half.

My god that was pure shite. Surprise surprise I come on here and find out people think we played well, unlucky etc etc.

I think there are two things going on here in parallel.

The way the goals went in, that was very unlucky. What led up to them however was not.
The penalty decision and McCarthy hitting the post was unlucky. That we failed to score anyway was not.

This is right. Of course we were very unlucky with the goals conceded, that's not in question. But I would argue with anyone singling out John Stones on the second goal as 'overplaying'. I really hate this criticism. There's a bloke near me who shouts at the team every time they try something different and it doesn't work. We were chasing the game at the time. And to be perfectly honest, the only players who tried to actually get past a player today were Stones and Coleman. Oh sorry Barkley did once in the first half too.  And people wonder why we couldn't score.

No it wasn't 'one of them days', it was a day like we have seen pretty much all season. A day where we are simply not good enough to break teams down. A day when we play the same style of slow passes back, across, forward, back again. We did not batter them at all except we won the stats. How many genuine very good goal scoring opportunities did we create today?  One shot off the post?  That was it.

Osman had two or three decent chances, Coleman was unlucky a couple of times and possibly should have had a penalty, Lukaku had two decent chances but backed off against the keeper and he also managed to shoulder the ball wide from 7 yards out. It wasn't great today but it wasn't nearly as bad as some of the shite that was served up earlier in the season.  We played some nice stuff even in to the final third, there was a couple of times in the first half where we played some really nice one touch stuff around the box.

It was more a performance from one team just happy to see the back of the season and the other team doing their annual get out of jail. If any of our chances had fallen we'd have probably won by two or three, even Advocaat admitted that they were lucky and we were the better team.

Swings & roundabouts. We lost to Sunderland.

Was Villa last week.

Roll on the Spurs game so we can all wave farewell to a season to forget.

I get it. I do. We want the season over with about 4 months ago... But could we come out and maybe have a little killer instinct against a shite team? Just a little? Please!? At home, too?

We score that 1st goal and we win that game. But we dick around with it, and inevitably wait for the fluke goal to go against us, and all of a sudden we turn the light bulb on.

It bugs me that our attacking game has to wait for us to go down a goal before it really wakes up.

Sigh.... Whatever....

Well! you are an evertonian. And don't start, I'm probably older than you?  ;D
