Another couple of mentions - Romario and Gheorghe Hagi

They'd make my nostalgic World cup squad.

This thread is making me sad.

Reminds me of the glory days of Calcio :(

There are loads of cracking players from that era not even mentioned here: Paolo Rossi, Dino Zoff, Gaetano Scirea, Roberto Baggio. And Enzo Scifo, who was Belgian :)

(Despite my constant trolling, I do have a certain amount of fondness for the Italian football of my youth. Even though it was mostly unwatchable :))

Enzo Scifo was a great player.

Dragan Stojkovic is one of the most talented players I have ever seen. Unfortunately he was injured quite a lot, and buggered off to Japan way too soon.

Stojkovic was supreme. His goal against Spain at Italia 90 was one of my favourite world cup goals

One of my first football memories was watching him boss it in the champions league in that 'teka' kit.

Can you give me a reason sir as to why they've never grown

no Maradona @Cassius.

Controversial that. Or is it still personal?

Prosinecki wasn't bad either.

I think another reason why I like to remember these players more is that you only got to see them a couple of times a year at most, so they took on a legendary quality simply because they were so rarely seen. Whereas Ronaldo and Messi, as good players as they are (and they are pretty damn fucking good), their ubiquity makes me weary and bored, it's the old rule of familiarity breeding contempt.
I didn't even remember I had a signature.

I think this is the best so far. Matteaus was simply outstanding in the 90 WC. I'd still have Schmeichel over Southall though.
