Pickford

Whoever Keane Jags Baines

Schneiderlin
Davies Sigurdsson

DCL Rooney Sandro

Whatever the more forward players can or can’t do they all work hard so I’m not too fussed on who plays where for this game.

But given that they do work hard and we’re struggling for creativity we should be pushing much higher up the pitch looking to force mistakes more.

It’s a risk further back but we need to compress the space between defence and forwards to cover for the lack of pace.

I'd be a bit surprised if Schneiderlin was fit for this one. We'll probably see Besic in his place?

Sounds like Chelsea will be making a lot of changes for this one so could be a golden opportunity for us.

Yes can be any DM really as long as they sit (although that rules out Besic...) ;)

Kenny Williams Jagielka Baines
MS Davies McCarthy
Lennon KM Rooney

Presuming Schneiderlin in the middle as with Rooney.

Got a text regarding some early team news - Mirallas & Lennon back in, Sigurdsson & Keane dropped apparently.

I actually put a team on here the other day with Mirallas & Lennon on either wing, think we need to get some balance in the team and players in their right positions, so quite pleased with that news

As long as Mirallas doesn’t continue his habit of starting narrow and running narrower ;)

Playing Lennon and Mirallas has got me quite happy. Actual wing play will be nice to see.

Think i'm a bit drunk on positivity atm, actually fancy us to get a result or atleast push it to pens.

Yes but Mirallas rarely plays like a winger these days. Very much an inside forward.

He is a good finisher though so I’d guess it’d be more for that.

Also there’s the chance that these two are playing as we’re saving some people for a mustn’t lose game on Sunday.

Agree with the last part though :)

That is not a balanced team in my book. We've been seeing something of that ilk all season - it's very Koeman-esque. No width, little pace.

Hoping against hope that we've seen the last of formations of that nature.

No offence like!

No that’s fine!

Apart from Lennon I don’t think anyone else is faster than those two wider players there, however. Given everyone’s form though as long as the wider forwards can run then I’m not too fussed who they are.

I think Rooney is our most reliable scorer but to minimise long sprints I’d leave him in the middle (but ask him to stay up top) where he can close down over shorter distances.

Overall though it’s an intent thing that I was getting at as we’ve been neither one thing or the other this season.

The lack of searing pace is only a massive issue if that’s all you’ve got to bail yourself out.

Playing higher up the pitch on the front foot should reduce this problem as we’d have more of the ball nearer the opposition goal which reduces the need for long sprints which highlight just how slow or fast someone is.

Massively agree with the fact there's people being rested for Sunday and so they should be. But with the way the U23s have been playing the last couple of years, I'd be surprised if DU doesn't try and implement that system. I personally think it will work with the group of players we have.

Yeah I think that system is fine.

One gets us to the QF of a cup, the other gets us three points closer to 7th place...

Yes but we’d have lost to Bristol city or Arsenal’s youth team in the next round anyway...

more worried about the calamity that our left back has become. sad to see Baines just falling off a cliff.

Noticed him on set piece duty tonight. hopefully that will give him confidence again.

Wasn’t a calamity at all tonight?

Also a lot more involved higher up the pitch as Mirallas held his position well.

After the initial excitement of rhino in charge and a new debutant, I thought the 1st half was pretty much the usual us under RK.

The goal we conceded 1st half was absolutely pathetic, leaving a player unmarked on the back stick like that is poor. Other than for that goal and apart from the Willian goal against very tired legs, I thought we nullified them pretty well.

Second half we were like a different side. One I haven't seen in a long long time. Crazy how we've got a model pro like Aaron Lennon who is blessed with pace and link up play unable to get in a side crying out for width.

I feel like this could be a resurrection for a number of members of the squad which will ensure a real feel good factor around us.

It's early, early days but hearing Unsworth's words of encouragement and passion from the touchline I think it's only a matter of time before we see OUR Everton back.

The switch to 4-2-3-1 in the 2nd, with Davies pushed up to the 10 role reduced the distances between midfield and the attackers which helped both getting closer with the pressing and also our own ball retention.

I mean, with that size, speed, and tackling ability...what more can you ask in terms of raw material for a DM?

If we stay with 3 in midfield, why not Davies, Beni, Gana?

In games where we’re expecting to have good amounts of possession it might be a struggle creatively with possession.

We’d probably have to play a more creative player instead of either Mirallas or Lennon who are also direct players.
