Putting Bolasie in front of Martina? Give your heads a wobble, lads.

I would say that at home vs teams we expect to beat, that as Martina doesnít overlap etc that having someone in front of him who he can give the ball to and theyíll take it on themselves would ease a bit of pressure.

When he plays with Sigurdsson then he needs to overlap to a create options b create space.

Understand defensive concerns.

Quite a few people have written about emotional attachment to the team.

In most peopleís XIs nearly every player has been here 18 months at most.

Compare that to when we had several players with hundreds of appearances for us and itís easy to see where a disconnect comes from even without consideration of performances/results.

Add to that itís also very difficult to get any continuity for the players themselves.

Pickford
Kenny Holgate Keane Martina
Gueye Rooney
Walcott Sigurdsson Bolasie
Tosun

Bench A Keeper, Jagielka, Williams, Rooney, Vlasic, DCL, Sandro
too many Rooneys for my liking  ;)

I'm bored so here's a 4-4-2 hoof ball lineup.

GK: Pickford
RB: Coleman
CB: Holgate
CB: Williams
LB: Baines
RM: Lennon
CM: Gana
CM: McCarthy
LM: Sigurdsson
CF: Tosun
CF: Walcott

The strategy is simple -- everyone defends, we hardly pass the ball at all (which is good because imagine that midfield trying to pass), Tosun tries to find Walcott with flick-ons (better than having Rooney chase them).

Would have been decent midfield mix of styles in early to mid 90s.

A bit like Utds midfield although they had pace on both sides.

Interesting full back concept.

In my head we were playing from right to left.

I'm having vlasic as one of the first names on the sheet.

The only player in this squad who can pick the ball up in tight areas and progress the attack.

Well as soon as we get a decent LB and a decent left sided CB we should be ok.

a fit Keane as CB (right side) and a fit Coleman and the defence should be ok.

Been thinking about this. Taking another crack at it, somewhat seriously.

GK: Pickford
RB: Kenny
CB: Holgate
CB: Keane (or anyone but Williams)
LB: Martina (please come back, Baines)
DM: Gana
CM: Davies
CM: Sigurdsson or Rooney (Rooney much better for passing from deep but we can make either work... maybe)
RW: Walcott
CF: Tosun
LW: Vlasic

Defense mostly picks itself (Holgate's partner -- what to do?). Gana is there to stay put and tackle/intercept everything that comes near him, his best role. Davies and Vlasic are there for ball progression (via dribbling) and retention (both decent at holding it in tight spaces) and also winning fouls. Walcott, Tosun, and Sigurdsson/Rooney are the "finishers," the players we need to make the final pass/shot.

I went for Vlasic over Bolasie/Lookman because, while those two are unquestionably better dribblers, they're also total wild cards who are just as likely to give the ball away as they are to pull off a bit of magic. Vlasic isn't as explosive but there's a premeditation to his game that those two lack and that's what I want in the team. He doesn't need to do anything special, just hold off pressure and help us inch forward.

Probably still shit but that's what you get when you buy a bunch of individuals with no regard for how they fit together. It's hard to find a way to get from defense/midfield to the final third, as evidenced by the fact that I'm hypothetically asking Davies and Vlasic to shoulder a lot of that.

Why is it there seems to be some un written rule about only playing one upfront...we sold lukaku ages ago and yet people still think we're able to play like that and only 2 people picked 2 forwards
