Living in Wakefield and kinda wanting to support a club but not liking the Yorkshire teams my next door neighbour had taken me to see, I was at a bit of a loss. My dad was never around to influence me (and besides, he just liked any club that played well), my mum didn't know what football was. But then I saw Kendall's Everton playing, I liked the way they played, and they played in blue, which was a nice colour. More than that, the players in the team really drew me in because they had personality and seemed cool and pretty hard as fuck. They played and they mixed it when they had to.
It's a tragedy that despite the success, the club was never allowed to truly see it's potential. Somewhere, in a alternate reality where Heysel never happened, Everton grew in the 80's and early 90's to dominate English and European football and we would be talking about dozens of documentaries about Howard Kendall and his troops, not just the one.
Somewhere, i have Howard's autograph on a betting slip.
