Going to be a tough match, let's not kid ourselves.
That's not saying we still couldn't get a result.
A draw would be a very good result. A scoring one, or anything more even more.

They won 0-6 at a lower side (GD Recreativo de Monsanto) in a Cup match on Saturday, that doesn't sound too shabby.

Played 7, won 6, drawn one in the Portuguese League:

At least we won't see the modern day Carsley/Neville combination this match.

I've got a feeling that Pienaar and Yakubu might get starts for this one, and as a result our performance levels will go up a gear or two.

---------------Howard--------------
Hibbert---Yobo---Distin---Baines
Pienaar---Fellaini---Osman---Bilyaletdinov
---------------Cahill---------------
-------------Yakubu------------

Bench: Nash, Gosling, Saha, Jo, Mustafi, Baxter, Rodwell

1-1. Cahill for us.

I think we might well get a result in this, even if it's just a draw.  I think physically they won't be a match for us although they do have some good technical players - I particularly think that Di Maria will give Hibbert a tough time down our right but they've also got a rejuvanated Aimar, as well as Saviola, and that Luisao in central defence is supposed to be pretty good too.  Of course the highlight will be getting to see Quim in action :snigger:

I'm going for an entertaining 2-2 draw, with us coming from behind.

I would settle for a 2-1 loss but we could manage at least a draw if Pienaar is fit

--------------------------Howard---------------------------

Hibbert----------Yobo----------Distin----------Baines

Bilyalet---------Fellaini-------Rodwell--------Pienaar

--------------------Saha---------Yakubu------------------

I'd like to see something like that, Yakubu and Saha linked up well against Wolves and if anything they'd offer a bit of movement and power upfront. Rodwell and Fellaini are both suited to a slower tempo and hopefully, Pienaar and Bilyaletdinov can provide some creativity.

1-0 Everton, Yakubu with the goal.

I can't decide whether I'd go with Thom's team or Toxteth Blue's team. One thing is for certain, I want to Pienaar start on one wing and Bilyaletdinov on the other.

I think a draw is a on the cards and 1-1 with Baines scoring a Free Kick.

Pienaar is looking unlikely to start.  Would imagine this means Osman on right which worries me a lot!

If the injury rumours are true, I'd expect this line up:

Howard

Hibbert Yobo Distin Baines

Gosling Fellaini Rodwell Bilya

Cahill

Yak/Saha

Subs Nash, Jo, Yak/Saha, Coleman, Wallace, Agard, Baxter

Ooh boy, are we struggling. Still once we get to the knock out stage, we'll have two new additions to the Euro squad in Neill and Heitinga, although we need them now.

Quote from: .MattyId go with Billy on the right and Jo on the left.

Thats actually not a bad call. Jo's got a good left foot and can cross as he showed at the weekend.

4-5-1....Cahill (AM), Rodwell (DM), Fellaini (CM), Bily (RM) and Jo (LM) in the midfield and saha up front. As for the defence...I stick with the line up we played against Bate (or if Coleman is as good as we have been lead to believe...lets give him a go)
Title: Benfica v Everton
Post by: top flight for a long time on October 22, 2009, 03:45:30 am
So we'll have 2 defenders playing in their preferred (and known) position and 2 out of position (probably).  The midfield picks itself, more or less, and we're unlikely to play 2 up front.

If the RS have an injury crisis we must have a casualty ward.

I have a really bad feeling about this one.  I think a draw would be a fantastic result.

I think 442 is the likely formation.

I know you did ... you named your team 2-3 hours before we knew... as I agreed with your team and bench excl. Yobo  .. I was just wondering if moyes could go with 4-5-1 without playing the youngster  ... using Jo as left wing could be the only option  ....

Howard
Coleman Hibbert Distin Baines
DnB Rodwell Fellaini Jo
Cahill
Saha

I like Gosling, but he is no right back and I'd worry he'd get caught out tonight. Hibbo is still a similar worry, but no decent alternatives and he played well there last time. Cahill for captain, we don't need any more pressure on Hibbo, Baines isn't a great leader and Rodwell has the dangerous players to watch. I'd like to see Yak on, but he hasn't looked that sharp or likely to create, but DnB could feed him.

There is no way we've been out played this half. They have broken better and delivered better balls into the area. Gosling looks out of place and I wonder if Hibbert might move out to RB and Duffy in a CB? I think we've had more possession....come on boys...all to play for.

This really. Better quality crossing, but considering the team we put out I didn't expect us to play as well as we have to honest. Shame about lax marking on the goal, but Coleman I thought has looked lively otherwise.

Im quite proud of the way we have gone about the game.  We are getting the ball down and playing some nice stuff, just missing that final ball.  Defensively we have been a bit naive but everyone is out of position so that's to be expected. As for Coleman, he has impressed me going forward but you cant fault him as he is out of position and its his debut.

Iv'e definately seen us play much worse with our best 11.

Kidding right, we are totally shit but do you think Benfica would be playing like this if they played their right back as centre back, started two youngsters in left and right back one of whom is clearly not a right back and were missing their four best players.  We whinge about injuries because we are missing an entire team!

i dont give a hit about that, the Money Moyes has pissed up the wall is pathetic! Wanna tell me how a team that cos roughly, £50m can be ripped to bits by a team costing less?

How did Burnley beat Man U?  Sunderland the RS?  If it was just down to money Man City would be top of the table, use your brain.

did any ot those teams concede 4 goals? Moyes time should be at an end! Coleman should not have played, Billy should have been at LB. Even i could say that? And why the fuck was Saha dropped?

Depleted.

What do you expect? This was always going to be a tough test, and without half the 1st team available i'm not suprised we are being beaten.

We'll do em at GP

Ah, so you want us to play our only decent creative force in left back?  Saha would not have won us the game today, shit the ball hasn't been near their area second half.  The issue hasn't been the Coleman, everything has been on Gosling's side.

Because Moyes has worked miracles with virtually no money no matter what bollocky squad valuation you come up with.  His net spend is crap and he has created a squad that qualifies for Europe and gets to an FA Cup final.  I questioned Moyes last week, this week wtf could he do?  Could any manager work with these injuries and get a result?

Quoteshut up, bury your head if u like.

Everyone is laughing at the red shite, we are shit! Why is nobody questioning moyes?

Probably because he isn't Jesus Christ and short of

a) Running on the pitch, and banging five goals in in quick succession

b) Performing a pitchside miracle and healing all of our injured players, and generate a fuckload of gold, buy the club and give us a generous yearly transfer budget

There's not that much he can do is there?

Pretty sure the team that beat them, their squad cost more to assemble than Citys

We've got our entire first choice defence missing, played pretty well in the first half, and are being well beaten by a very good side who were clearly fired up by their manager's half time talk and told to attack Gosling.

A defeat, I was expecting. The points of worry for me are Jo and Cahill's quiet captaincy.

Liverpool have spent way more than us, have 2 players injured and are falling apart. We have 11 1st teameras out, 11, ELEVEN. An entire team and this is our first loss in 8 games. wake up you idiot. Support the team when things are bad, not only when going well. Nobody to blame when you have ELEVEN(will say it again) 1st teamers out.

Thought I would start typing eleven because when anyone types the number 11, you dont seem to get it.

Indeed, you have to give credit to Benfica, they are supposed to have some excellent attacking players and unfortunately they have totally exploited the fact we have virtually no defence.

Sounds like we were fucking woeful. Lads at work (well, students who watched game) told me that Cahill and Fellaini were both awful, Baines didn't start as he was injured as well and that we only fashioned 1/2 half chances.

Sounds more embarassing than the 5-1 loss to Bucharest.

We were not that bad Thom, we played some really nice football in the first half and were doing well, we were just lacking that final pass.  Benfica had a couple of half chances but they were not carving us open.  Once they scored the next 2, which were due to errors and defensive naivity, which is to be expected, we just lost our way.

I would like to say first half we played ok, some nice build up work,

second half we were  complete undone by their number 20 who i think we should sign as he is fucking ace

lets hope we can get some of the first teamers back as i think we have been given bad luck with injuries of late,

i dont think many other teams would be able to cope without the players we have lost personal i will be happy with as many points as we can get and start being negitive when we getting outplayed and beat when we have a full strengh side out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

roll on jan so we can hopefully get some creative players as we really really need some

Sounds a bit more accurate that I've read a couple of reports on the game.

I think a lot of Evertonians wouldn't have minded a defeat with the team we had out, but 5-0 is still a difficult result to take.

What is Jo supposed to do with an unfit Yakubu and a midfield full of holes?

At half time, there was nothing between the teams. 5 minutes killed the game, and we can hardly lay the blame at Goslings door when he is being played at right back yet again.

The biggest disappointment for me was the way we rolled over and died, and didn't look interested once the goals went in.

Moyes looked lost for ideas tonight. With so many holes letting in water, where do you plug first?
