Post by: The Doc on November 01, 2009, 05:58:08 pm
I'll take a draw with the way we are playing, but going for a 3-2 win, which should be enough to get us to the next stage (BATE at home being the clincher) They lost 2-0 on Saturday, so hopefully we can get at them and get a bit of revenge

if pienaar and billy are fit and the yak partners saha up front i will be optimistic. In the first half of the game at theirs, i thought we were good and deprived their flare players of possession.

Flying over for this, first time at Goodison this season, well excited. I reckon 2-2 with Saha and Cahill scoring for us. Anyone up for drinks before the game?

I think we'll win, 2-1 Yak and Yobo to score, cracking atmosphere as well and a really exciting fast-paced game.

Going to see Muse that night so I'll miss it. Pretty disappointed but as long as we win I'm not bothered.

2-0 to us. Yakubu and Distin. Same team as Saturday.

I'd really like us to win, but that seems a big ask with our current injuries and form.
Another home draw?
That's what we should at least be looking at.
We do seem to up a gear for the European nights at home.

But I hope the boys can grind out a few goals to help the GD

Post by: Risky on November 03, 2009, 12:16:04 pm
I think a lot of it depends on both teams approach to the game - a draw would suit both sides as both should still be confident of qualifying with that result.  However a win for either team would seal qualification (not sure if that's mathematically definite but it would be as good as anyway), so I suppose it's up to either team to go for the win.

I imagine that we'll be much stronger than first time round, and I also expect them to be far less adventurous than they were in the first game. I think there will be goals though, and I have a horrible feeling that we're going to lose this 2-1.

I expect us to save a bit of face, and draw tonight... then stuff Bate and qualify for the knockout stage.

It would obviously be good to win the group and avoid the CL drop outs. That would be the easy way though  ::s

i would take a draw. I expect athens to beat bate. So therefore a draw will keep us a point clear of athens. We may lose to athens at their place, even though they looked crap against us. But i think benfica will beat athens last game with us beating bate. Either way we must get something before we play bate.

There's still a chance we'd get a CL club even if we came top of the group. It would be one of the four worst CL drop outs or one of the second placed Europa teams.

Closest yet, great cross in from Billy dropped out to Baines who had a shot blocked, dropped out to Rodwell about 25yards out who sent a dipping shot just wide of the post...perfect arc just a little to the right, undoubtably going to be a class player if he keeps improving at them

I've thought gosling was a central midfielder though? Or that's where he played when he was younger, just doing an ossie on the right unfortunately. In fact my guess is he's like ossie in a couple years, same trickery and whatnot but not  enough pace for the wing.

Gosling isn't a right midfielder, but a centre midfielder. You are right. I don't think he's a very good player either. But then he's out of position.

Oh for a decent right midfielder.

I think that's the best 45 I've seen fromr Fellaini, looks up for it, always looking for the ball, decent control and distribution.

I'd like to see Bily and Baines link up a bit more on the left, we could do with Bily swinging somemore crosses in.

Overall a pretty good performance sp far.

Half Time

The players seem to be very edgy, both teams have created chances. I'm a bit concerned about our defence, it seems pretty shaky while the Benfica defence seems strong.

Fellaini has done ok, Rodwell has done well, not been impressed with Gosling and I don't like Yakubu being out on the left wing, his crosses are terrible.

Not a bad 1st half performance, but it's heart in mouth time every time they break quickly and get the ball in our box.  At the moment I'm not sure whether it's because they're good or because we're shaky, probably something inbetween that to be honest.

Positives - Bily's crosses, Fellaini, Yakubu looks sharp if slow at the same time, Rodwell is looking good.

Negatives - mass panic when they attack us, lack of composure in all areas of the pitch, lack of presence up front, and Gosling having a little bit of a 'mare.

We're in this and we've got a chance but let's hope we don't do our all too common start of 2nd half collapse again.

Poor 2nd half performance, we're really out of sorts and the result tonight won't help at all.

Having said that, Benfica are an excellent team.  They have the Barcelona thing to their game - they're great on the ball, their movement is superb, and they compliment all the artistry by working really hard all over the pitch and not giving the opposition a chance to settle on the ball.

The sad thing is that the pressure and getting in their faces just wasn't there from us tonight, and that's the very least you would expect.  I'm beginning to worry now that there's an element of thinking that we're good enough that we'll just find our way out of this bad run and win a few games soon, and I'm not sure we're going to do that soon at all.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not going all woe is me we're in a relegation dogfight or anything, but I'm just massively dissapointed that in my eyes we may have peaked over the last 2 or 3 years and now we're falling back away from those "heights".

No heart, especially after the goal. We need a win badly, I don't care how we play next game, we just need to win to get some confidence and belief that we actually have the ability to win. This can't continue until we get players back, by then we'll be out of europe and looking at mid table at best.

You can blame the manager for this.  If he'd stop looking like a child who's pet dog had just died, and whining making excuses about injuries for them, the players that go on the pitch might have a bit more belief and fight.

OK, we have injuries, we are down to the bare bones.  Who's fault is that?  Yes, Billy Bullshitter is culpable.  BUT, so is Moyes.  If he took his tongue out of Bill's arsecrack in pre-season the last few years, instead of making excuses for lying twat, we may have been shut of him years ago.

Sorry, but I'm fucking sick of watching dour hoofball, players unable to string 2 passes together, substitutions made when it's too late every fucking week.

Things have got to change from the top downwards, and fucking quickly.

People can say what they like about Fellaini but he is one of the very few players in our team who can put the ball on the floor and actually pass it.
People can say what they like about putting the ball on the ground, but you need to put in the back of the net.

Derby is going to be 2 under pressure managers. Benitez and Moyes in the same boat. Not performing in the league, struggling in Europe. Tough times these are boys, tough times

Benfica play the ball on the ground, they pass and move. They have scored seven past us over the two games.

Tonight was just dire, I lost count of how many times we give the ball away.

Im not gonna blame moyes because he can only tell the players what to do its the players that just couldnt pass to another blue shirt it happened all game and it was very fustrating

Hibbert just made me pull my hair out at times same as Gosling
Billy i thought was ok same as Baines
Rodwell and felliani were good i thought

But the inability of the team to find a blue shirt was just total shit!

The 2nd goal really did piss me off... if we were on a winning streak that would of been for called for offside but
as things are not going ourway at times it was called as onside

The ref was a fkn joke tho... but we did have a couple of decentish chances mainly cahills first half header argh!

fustrated once again!!!!!!!!

There really was class difference between us and Benfica in the two matches.
Benfica are a Champions League team, and we're not.
But the injuries have thrown a spanner in the works, but aside from that, there is little form or self belief.
And that is worrying.

Quote from: RiskyPoor 2nd half performance, we're really out of sorts and the result tonight won't help at all.

Good post.

Dont agree. They need a miracle to go through, in all honest we probably only need to beat BATE at home to go through, hardly struggling. We just arent as good a team as Benfica especially without our best 3 players.

While the performance of the team was pathetic, what about the crowd, once again absolutely awful support, can,t sing/wo,nt sing, fuckiin awful, while we get the numbers home and away we do not get the vocal support of other teams in the prem and especially europe were we are totally embarassing with our 3 song repetoire!!
