baines isnt a midfielder ffs. just because he's good going forward and plays on the left doesnt make him a winger. he's a defender and if hes fit enough to play he should play as a defender.

mcfadden's not a joke. it's gone from neville to hibbert to mcfadden, there always has to be someone to boo. the last few games he's started he's done well. you can't rule out fernandes starting on the left either, moyes did that last season.

I very much doubt Fernandes will start. Hibbert had a great games against City and Arsenal so he won't be dropped and as we all know Neville is undroppable. Maybe Manny will start ahead of McFadden but I can't see it happening. I think the best he can look for is the bench.

i think this is winnable without osman... in fact id rest him to ensure he is fully fit for the massive game against chelsea where we need him. but with fernandes, cahill, arteta and carsley as essential midfielders i dunno if he might start or we could go 4-5-1 with neville right back and 1 up front!! but how would that be showing attacking intent i suppose we did score 7 goals at home in a 4-5-1 and we only need 1 goal plus we can change the line up if need be if we HAVE to have goals scored in a limited time period

i think 4-5-1 will be the option against chelsea with ossie in the fold.

To be honest with the lack of fit midfielders availible, i'd be very suprised if he doesn't.
1 week is enough to prep someone for our tactics, and he's a much better option than someone retruning from an injury. Its not like valencias training routine wouldn't of kept him fit and ready to be called upon.
Title: Wigan v Everton
Post by: Blake on January 14, 2008, 12:57:57 pm
We are short of midfield options now. I would have thought the best option would be to start Fernandes, to get him some match action. Then replace him at some point in the second half with Osman. Or the other way round, but I would like to see one of them start, and the other get a good run from the bench.

Fernandes is lacking match fitness, not general fitness. A week training with the squad then 50/60 odd minutes match time is probably what he needs to settle in. A good 30 minutes for Osman, just to make sure he has a little action before the Wednesday after. Should mean we can take on Chelsea with the best line up available & every one with some recent football under their belts. Also means we have a good side out against Wigan - because there is no point dropping silly points at the moment.

moyes's usual attitude is i dont care who you are you have to earn the right to replace one of the players who are doing well, injuries give him a chance to start though.

i think a 5 man midfield helps him too if he's not 100% yet. theres also a lot to be said for having fresh legs, maybe he's not match fit, but he hasnt played millions of games over the xmas period either.

does anyone know if he's played any kind of reserve football in spainland

Post by: IUToffee on January 15, 2008, 08:23:25 am
I saw Ossie's interview on EFC and know he's training this week, but it didn't seem likely that he would be able to see action against Wigan.  Also, I'm not sure if it's already been brought up, but for your fifth yellow card you sit out a game after 7 days, so Hibbert/Cahill would miss the Spurs game, not Chelsea, if they picked up a yellow (I believe).

That said if he doesn't it'll be the midfield as Man City - Osman won't be ready yet.  Maybe as a sub.

Poor first half, could have Wigan's way easily. However, we've got a two goal cushion and should get a third to really wrap the game up. We've hardly had any graft going forward, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Manny and Vaughan introduced on the hour, even if we're still 2-0 up.

We'll get a period were all the play should be ours, but we'll have to make it pay, as Wigan will get chances as well.

Great result, especially as we were poor for most of the game. Vaughan did very well when he came on, and it did seem that the introduction of Manny was probably due to the state of the pitch more than anything.

Giving credit to Wigan though, they deserved a point today. However, we got the 3 points and are up to 4th.

Post by: montanatoffeefan on January 20, 2008, 09:40:45 am
Good grinder for 3 points. Got outplayed pretty badly, but took advantage of their mistakes more than they took advantage of ours.

As much as Bramble deserves credit for helping us win, I'd also give a pat on the back to Bent and Koumas. They botched some very good chances, especially Bent. Brown butchered the couple he got as well. Palacios and Valencia did their part, too. Heskey retreated into his invisible mode. Total team, or at least a half-team effort from Wigan to get us the win. Their other half played very well.

we were piss poor today. aj had an absolute shocker, he seems to have lost a yard or two of pace, and that to me is his biggest asset. without it, i dont see what he can add to the team. he cant hold the ball up, his left foot is non-existent. he obviously aint going to outjump anybody. if west ham were to come in for him again, id let him go.

You haven't got a clue have you! You don't think he can add anything to the team. He scored and worked his arse off. He turned bad passes into good ones and was a good general outlet for us today. And of course he's not going to outjump anyone but it doesn't help if were lumping balls up to him.
