The race for... Europe?
The race for... Europe?
Half-way through the season exactly and we're currently 2 points off a champions league spot assuming top 5 gets in again this year.
1-5 champions league
6-7 Europa League
8 Conference League
Carabao Cup SFs are Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle. You'd assume if Newcastle don't win it then the winners definitely won't take up a place in the league.
Obviously FA Cup we wait and see.
Dare to dream?

Re: The race for... Europe?
Why not. What's the point if you can't get excited?
If we replicate the first half of the seasons form, 56 points you'd think might be enough for 8th, hopefully, conference league should be gettable if we remain consistent.

Re: The race for... Europe?
Lost track a long time ago of the permutations.
English club winning champs league doesn't change the 1-5 anymore unless they are outside the top 5 and then it's the top 4 qualify isn't it?
Similar with Europa league? We get 2 places regardless of whether an English club win it or not?
There's no "extra" place if a club from that country wins a European comp.
And is it still winner of league cup = Europa, runner up gets nothing. If the winner is top 5 then an extra European place goes to the league?
Ditto FA cup
So if City win both cups (beating a champs league team in the final) and no-one from England wins the a European cups it could be:
1-5 Champs league
6-8 Europa League
9 Conference
?
Any fair play awards still knocking about?

Re: The race for... Europe?
It has usually been around this time in recent seasons (if not earlier) that we've opened a relegation thread and discussing when we should pull the trigger to sack the manager.
This is the clearest gauge of how far we've come in the last year under Moyes.
Personally, I'm in the push-the-boat-out camp, where we make Europe our aim this season and try to recruit accordingly. Just a couple of signings (RB, CF) - even if only on loan - could see us kick on again.
That said, it's just nice not to go into every single game dreading defeat. We're still not consistent enough to be genuine top-half contenders but, in the short term, it feels like there may be a window of opportunity. And, longer term, the wheels are definitely in motion.

Re: The race for... Europe?
About a dozen sides will be saying the same the league is that tight. We'll need quite a few of those to fall away but if we carry on keeping it tight at the back and our forwards start to find some form in front of goal then why not.
Re: The race for... Europe?
Not sure where you're getting 3 Europa spots from in that situation?superpull wrote: ↑Thu Jan 01, 2026 7:55 pm Lost track a long time ago of the permutations.

League Cup winners get a conference league spot which just means 1-5 Champions League and 6-7 Europa League. Nothing for anyone else
Re: The race for... Europe?
Fully in the mix and that’s all I asked for at the start of the season.
Brentford and wolves at home next.
I think if we’re serious contenders for a possible top seven place we have to take a routine six points from those games.
Take anything less than that and 8th is our best shot.
Must admit, part of me would be a bit gutted if the conference league is our first trophy for over 30 years.
I have full confidence in moyes to bring that home.

Re: The race for... Europe?
We've certainly improved, we look better than last season and the points suggest so.
But I think our position is as much to do with the middling condensed distribution of teams in the league.
There's still only 7 points between 5th and 15th.
We're only one win above 14th.
Our xPts statistic has us in 13th.
Paints a different picture.
We're far from ready.
Stability and growth over Manic/Depressive.

Fuck yeah after all the doom and gloom and relegation fights it’s nice to see a thread like this aim high if we finish mid table it’s progress but there is opportunity there this season

Re: The race for... Europe?
This for me is where TFG and Kinnear push the boat out and perhaps bring in two quality loan signings (RB and a forward) that propel us forward to even finish top 6. Chelsea are a mess and how Utd are 6th is bewildering, both are there for the taking.
Get Moyes a couple of players this window to make that step up. Getting europe means we'll get the next calibre of players in the summer.

Re: The race for... Europe?
2 from the league and 1 for the cup isn't it?
Or is it: if Wolves and Burnley won the two cups (I know not possible), is there zero places for the league?
Re: The race for... Europe?
Isn't it if they won the cups there'd be no conference league place for the league? FA Cup winners get Europa, League Cup winners get Conference. But more often than not the league Cup winners qualify for CL or Europa so the normality is that the conference place goes to the league.
Re: The race for... Europe?
Only issue I have here is that we win the cup this year so not a major concern re: conferenceTheRam wrote: ↑Thu Jan 01, 2026 10:34 pm Fully in the mix and that’s all I asked for at the start of the season.
