The City player had kicked the ball and it was heading out of play (and might well have been out of play) before he was even made contact with. Rolled one thousand times in the gutter, for dramatic effect....

There was nothing in Allison's challenge that prevented a goal being scored, and his challenge wasn't heavy, the rules really are an ass.
It hasn't necessarily got anything to do with the ball being in play or preventing a goal.

If a player slid in that late - even if the ball had gone out of play - and took out an opponent anywhere else on the pitch, it'd be a foul.

I hate it when attacking players leave a leg in and initiate the contact themselves - that's cheating. But Allison has clattered into him there and was nowhere near the ball himself. It's reckless and there shouldn't really be any debate about it being a penalty.

I'm not complaining about the outcome, but logically how the fuck can you deny an obvious goalscoring opportunity when a goal was scored.

Agreed with you. I find Sky and their coverage painful tbh.

Arguably what really stopped his goalscroing opportunity was the ball rolling into the goal.

Arguably! It's just because Haaland fouled szoboszlai to stop him preventing the goal, isn't it? So they had to disallow the goal for that.

Should have just let it stand for vibes though.

Yeah, at some point a referee should be allowed to use their judgment and knowledge of the game to make the decision. If they're not, their ability to make decisions will wither away. (My personal opinion is that this has already happened.)

The last proper Hungarian referee, Sándor Puhl, talked a lot about the importance of being aware of the context in which you make your decisions. He probably would've allowed the goal to stand and given both players a yellow for unsportsmanlike behaviour, and while technically that's not the correct decision, nobody would've felt unjustly treated.
