Well I guess you can never know what pronoun the recipient prefers.Bluebridge wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2026 1:20 pm What’s with this “player” of the match? What happened to “man” when it’s the men’s game?

Re: James Garner
I wasn’t able to watch the whole game, but first half while I was looking for him in the snippets I saw I thought he noticeably stood out. Perhaps that’s a bit of bias, but the comments and match award it seems to back that up.
I think he’s got a very good chance of making the squad, from that point who knows. Don’t think he’s that far from stealing some game time from Anderson.

A massive wankfest over the amazing benefits Sean Dyche will bring them as he saves them this year then returns them to their rightful CL places next season

Just the all the stupid changes in the game and modern day life in general, if it were mixed teams then fine, call it player of the match, but it’s not, it’s the men’s game being played by men, the ladies game is played by ladies, so have lady, woman/girl of the match, doesn’t slip of the tongue that easy, but neither does player of the match imo.
Re: James Garner
The problem with man of the match is that most people watch men's footy, and that's from grass roots kids to adults.Bluebridge wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2026 8:31 pm Just the all the stupid changes in the game and modern day life in general, if it were mixed teams then fine, call it player of the match, but it’s not, it’s the men’s game being played by men, the ladies game is played by ladies, so have lady, woman/girl of the match, doesn’t slip of the tongue that easy, but neither does player of the match imo.
This then means in mixed sex games at a young age everyone still says man of the match even if it's a girl. I've heard it a few times when I coached and a girl got 'man of the match'.
So player rather than man is good for the game as if everyone calls it that then you don't get people down the line defaulting to the previous 'man' reference.
Obviously it doesn't affect middle aged blokes like me and possibly you, but to young girls playing it certainly will. Makes the game more inclusive and less male centric.

I mean, the concept of POTM itself is a bit ridiculous. An award for something that's undeniably subjective, where people are doing different jobs in a manner as directed by their manager (that few are privy to),... yet one has to be chosen, seperate from all others...
How do a dozen saves stack up against a hat trick?
How does a killer pass compare to a captain who through words alone (that few are privy to) lifts their whole team to win?
It's something to chat about I guess.
Anyway, Garner for the world cup because he's ours.
