I'm not sure that's mutually exclusive. It's easily the biggest hole in the squad. There are different types of playing styles and what your full/wing backs do are instrumental to most playing styles. So as opposed to guessing what next years manager wants, we fill the hole with the cheapest option that fits into a Moyes team and reassess next summer?

I dunno, Johnston and Norton-Cuffy are both likely to cost the same, but Johnston is 6 years older, and has plied his trade at a lower level. Johnston would be a signing for this manager. Plus, £15m is not throwaway money for a club in our position, I can’t see us spending that on a rb for Moyes, and then spending again on an upgrade/player for the new manager in a seasons time.

Agreed. There have to be better options for a right back.

It's not like we are signing a Norgaard-type player for the position. No resale value but buying proven experience at the top level to slot right in for what feels like a nominal fee in today's market.

We're taking a decent sized monetary and footballing risk which we can ill afford to take.
