Godfrey is 10 * better defensively, going forward I don't think Patterson warrants the praise he gets off some. His balls into the box are always 50/50 for me. Godfrey cannot cross the ball to save his life though

Look at them now with a so called progressive manager.

His record at developing young defenders is very good.
No? Look at Brighton. They were grim under Hughton and finished 17th with dull players. Potter came in and built the team that he wanted. They still finished 17th for a couple of years but he didn't persist with limited players because that's just what it's like managing a lower Premier league side that you should just be happy they're there. Could make similar arguments for Bournemouth.

Dyche isn't sitting at home pining for attacking full backs. They're not for him.

I'm sure if Patterson was actually showing good ability he'd be playing him. Not sure why people are trying to dress up Patterson as the second coming of Cafu being ruined by a stubborn manager.

He's working with what he's got, and Patterson's shown nothing to warrant being in the team.

Some people wanted Ancelotti out because he wouldn’t play Nkounku. Benitez for not playing Dobbin as a striker (well, for being a knob, too), Dyche/Lampard for not playing Simms.

Players get a lot better when they’re on the bench, seemingly.

Disagree but personal opinions I guess. Also, if Keane wasn't genuinely putting 0/10 performances at the start of the season then Branthwaite probably wouldn't be in the team right now either despite being 100 times the player he is. Serge Gnabry couldn't get in a Tony Pulis West Brom team. Certain managers just won't have certain types of players over others.

Re: Relegation

Why do people have to massively exaggerate something to get a point across? No one's saying Patterson's the next Cafu or that he's getting better sitting on the bench, just that after some of the shows Young has put in Patterson could quite probably do a better job either at right back or further up on the right with someone else at right back. He's only 22 but we've invested a chuck of money in him and should be developing him one way or the other, either here or out on loan, not playing a 38 year old who can barely run the length of himself these days. I'd rather see Patterson make mistakes and learn from it than Young who is only getting worse but pulling him in and out the team is of no benefit whatsoever.

Godfrey is not and will never be a right back Patterson is an international right back who will be playing in the euros in the summer can defend as well as Godfrey and is way way better going forward

But he is an actual right back who plays the position Godfrey isn’t he persisted with myko during a shaky spell when lads on here wanted him dropped or even sold why not show the same faith in Patterson

We have spent £15m on a young RB and made him 4th choice. Worst case scenario is that he should be playing on loan at a top 6 championship side right now.

To be honest I think the main issue is that there will be minimal difference in the team no matter who plays right back.

They're all pretty much around the same level with a lot of glaring weaknesses.

A position that should be high on our list in the summer assuming we can actually buy anyone.

I doubt anyone would argue Godfrey isn't and will never be a right back. Think plenty would disagree that Patterson can defend as well though.

In an ideal situation we'd be 12th, in no danger of being relegated and we could afford to let Patterson make the mistakes he looks like making every time he plays.

But it's not an ideal situation and that mistake may well be something we can't afford to let happen.

I'm not arguing playing Young RB instead mind, or actually Young at all, ever. But I also don't think Patterson with his experience level and the competence he's shown on the pitch should be anywhere near a desperate relegation fight.

Re: Relegation

My view is that we're not great at handling and developing young players generally as a club, and we haven't been for years and years. Part of that is down to the high pressurised situations we often find ourselves in, where managers feel like they need to go with the conservative, solid option and part of that is the the managers we choose.

I think the young players that do well here are generally an exception to the rule, and the ones that do get chances to develop here only do so because it would be mad to leave them out, because they are so much better than the alternatives (in recent years Gordon, Onana and Branthwaite) or when we literally haven't had an alternative at the club (Mykolenko).

I feel like other clubs and other managers would've used players like Patterson and Dobbin much more and would've helped them develop more than we have this season.

I haven't seen anything from Dobbin at all that warrants game time tbh, heard The Blue Room saying he needs to play but I don't see anything there that gives me confidence he'd be worth that time on the pitch.

I understand the argument for Patterson even if in reality I don't agree he's ready or can develop quickly enough without being a liability, but think Dobbin is miles off being a premier league player.
