Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
I'm not keen. I thought he was decent at Leeds and certainly not brilliant. I thought Pep must have signed him for a bet and couldn't see how in hell he was going to play much football there. I thought a loan to West Ham would be a clue as to whether he was still decent and nothing about that has made me more enthusiastic.
With limited funds, unless he was willing to come in on a voluntary basis, this has a bigger downside than an upside for me.

In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
I think he could be good for us if he get anywhere near to his form at Leeds, but looking at the way he played at westham, he doesn't look like he wants to.
I'd swerve him unless it's at a super low cost.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Even forgetting about his terrible form at Man City and West Ham, I just don't see how he fits. Dyche's and Bielsa's football couldn't be more different.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
I think he fits in.
Good off the ball, works hard and plays forward quick.
I think too much is made of what a dyche player is. It’s like he doesn’t want people to pass the ball.
As long as you do what he asks he likes his ballers.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
I think too much is being made of his West Ham loan tbh... He sat on the bench at City for 18 months barely playing, then turned up at West Ham out for shape (ok partly his fault but also it's a reflection of being unwanted at City imo)... Wasn't even coming in as first choice and just didn't seem to have the form, fitness or desire.
Imagine Dyche on the blower telling him he'll be fitter than he's been since the Bielsa days and a first choice here, that'd solve almost all the issues he had at West Ham.
The only stumbling block for me would be the terms of the deal, because I think the player would be a success here.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
My concerns are Phillips is 28, would require an astronomical wage contribution and a decent loan fee, and he's very recently proven not to be Moyes-fit let alone Dyche-fit.
In short, he fits the profile of who we were signing 5-6 years ago, which is what I hope we're moving away from.
Would Brighton sign him?

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Would Brighton be shopping for loans and freebies though? All well and good saying we need to be more like Brighton, but the reality is we aren't capable right now of such things.Trowel wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2024 5:24 pm My concerns are Phillips is 28, would require an astronomical wage contribution and a decent loan fee, and he's very recently proven not to be Moyes-fit let alone Dyche-fit.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Brighton have bought great players for less than Phillips loan to West ham cost
Fully understand we aren't set up to just be like Brighton. That doesn't mean we should be taking players on 100k a week wages who've failed at the top level. He's exactly what we repeatedly did wrong. Paying elite wages for players who've proven not to be elite.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Brighton have signed James Milner, Adam lallana and Danny wellbeck over the last few years.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
The most expensive player Brighton have bought since 2020 is Caicedo, for less than we bought Beto.
We aren't capable, but not for that reason.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Big no off me.
We can't be getting involved in deals like this, where we are paying good money for a loan fee and wages and gambling that he's going to become decent again after as Brownie says he stunk the place out at west ham.
Who knows? he might go somewhere else and it turns out to be a great loan.
But we have a very limited budget and we can't go taking a chance on this guy

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
28? Thought he was about 23-24, I’d swerve at that age if we’re going to pay a big loan fee and £100k wages.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Getting him early is a big factor, a full pre season with us and Dyche would likely make a huge difference going into the season and how much we potentially get out of him.
