Unfortunately Southgate is an exceptionally boring and cautious man, so it's led to things like him playing a 32 year old Lewis Dunk (who clearly has no real future in international football) in a friendly before picking Branthwaite, who may well emerge one of the most prominent defenders of his generation.
Seriously, what the fuck was this about?
I don’t mind Dunk but he’s been caught out for pace a few times this season and it’s the shortest of short-sightedness regarding Branthwaite!
Just read the report in the Times, Johnathan Northcroft, player ratings, Branthwaite “naive” and “ has flaws to iron out” one star, Lewis Dunk by comparison, four stars.
Jarrad Branthwaite
As a young, left-sided central defender with presence, there is good reason why Branthwaite is attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle. However, he remains naive at the very top level and there have been flaws to iron out throughout the campaign. Probably not his time yet.
★☆☆☆☆
I thought Jarrad was extremely comfortable last night. Apart from getting there a little late on a challenge, he had nothing to do other than pass the ball through the lines.
There were also some really good performances by some of the newer lads like Wharton and Eze, and I think Konza is a very good player. Just a really solid, reliable defender.

TBF I can't see where that Branthwaite thing comes from. Northcroft gave him a standard 6 in the article I read when looking around.
Isn't it a rating based on who he wants to go to Germany rather than last nights match.

Ah got you. No idea what the "very top level" is because he's bossed it in the Premier League. Maybe the best striker in the world bodying him once will lead to some lazy opinions.

Yeah its still bullshit. There's not much argument for what little minutes he could get going to dunk who apparently is 4 out of 5 to go.
It's starting to look like it might be Branthwaite who misses out purely because he appears to be getting the least opportunities of all the centre back options

Which is really weird given he’s the only left footed centre back and the left back options are so slim that we might end up playing a CB there
A small part of me wants him not to go to the champs, very selfish on my part and extremely short sighted but less exposure may give us the tiniest of chances that we keep him next year before the inevitable happens. I'm clutching I know

Very much clutching, I want him to go, for him and for us if we do sell him, then it raises his value.
Clearly if he goes and gets game time that an increase on his value. Keane got in the England squad whilst at Burnley and cost us £25m and he only had 1season left on his contract, so getting call up now would be a bonus for us.
