You could read that statement as he wants to get there by the end of the season before he leaves.

However, it's hard to know what the plan is here for him. He could probably get a gig sat on the bench of a bigger club, and do that path...but if he wants to play regularly I'd be surprised if the grass is much greener for him.

From the club's point of view, it's good his fitness seems to be a bit more stable, but we're not in the position to be handing out fat (probably) last contracts for any player right now. If there is a reasonable deal to be made while we try and build up our depth/experience in that position it might be the sensible thing to do...but it's a tricky situation.

Being annoyed at people for wanting to move on from DCL is ludicrous. It is not unreasonable to want to move on from a striker who is statistically the worst in Europe at actually putting away the chances that are created for him. That's true even if DCL helps in other ways on the pitch -- which DCL does, but i'm not sure it is to the extent some of his super fans think it is, as evidenced by the fact that his passing and possession statistics range from completely average to actually awful. I've seen nothing showing that we have actually performed better from a statistical perspective when DCL is on the pitch since 2021-22. If it exists, i'd love to see it. Until then, can people stop acting like they are so much more knowledgeable about football than the rest of us when it comes to crediting DCL's supposed special ability to "drag us up the field" in a way apparently no other striker could do?

but the fact that we struggle without him is more indicative of the other strikers we have/have had rather than how good he is. I think the point he was making is that even though his hold up play is great, if we had someone else who wasnt quite as good at that, but could score then we would might do better.

I know we're not meant to acknowledge that a lot of footie players treat their career like a job, but I can absolutely imagine myself being uninspired and waiting for this manager to leave if I was a player.
