Based on what though?

Palace sold him for £1m a couple of years ago because they rated him so lowly.

£15m isn't even very much for a young player who is rated as high potential, it's quite low really.

Might turn out alright but I don't think there's any evidence to suggest he's going to be a star. It's probably a bit of an educated punt that he's going to be Premier League quality at some point, maybe this season if we're lucky.

You are really going out of your way to defend dyche recently

Are you ignoring the fact he didnt even play a game for Palace?

His age?

His fantastic season at Lyon?

Ive read many reports and ive watched his highlights/games and play etc

Yeah maybe it is a punt, but i would put a lot of money on him becoming a very very good player in a much better team than ours.

The season at Lyon doesn't always translate, there are tons of example of top performers in the french leagues totally failing when moving to the prem.

I think you're probably right, he seems to have the right qualities to grow into a good quality prem centre half, but that doesn't mean he's ready now.

He looked good against doncaster, but so did keane so I'm not sure that means anything. He was exposed a number of times against roma, and on one occasion he was very flat footed and bypassed by a single pass through the channel. With that being all we've really seen of him in a more competitive environment for us, I wouldn't say he's justified a start over anyone else yet.

It's not about 'prem experience', dyche seems to have certain requirements that players need to meet before they start playing. Sometimes they get a chance to demonstrate they are ready in a cup game or due to injury, sometimes through training and sub appearances, but it's far from a unique approach.

A bit premature to be having this discussion, how dodgy was Branthwaite before his loan spell? Let’s judge his capabilities when we’ve properly seen him in the flesh, in the first team.

It’s the very same situation as branthwaite last season coming off a good season in a different league just needs to play can’t see why he isn’t

Maybe he’s got potential to be a really good player but needs easing into the premier league?

I don’t think palace selling him is a red flag at all.

He proved himself at lyon which is a big step to make for somebody who hasn’t played much football.

I'll always reserve judgement on a player until they've shown they deserve the shirt. We constantly have shouts of some kid who ends up being released being the answer, or Beto should be starting... JOB is just another on a long line of players that people claim are better without them doing anything to actually warrant that idea.

It's amazing how many times Dyche or whoever has been in charge has been right about not playing X or Y player when people have demanded they start over someone else.

I'll be happy of O'Brien turns out to be better than Keane, and after Bournemouth I'd be 100% starting him... But he hasn't actually done anything yet to warrant an opinion that he's worth playing.

As always the 'anyone is better than <insert player's name here>' isn't a particularly great argument. These players need to take their chance if and when they get it, some will others won't and we have no idea which camp O'Brien is in at present.

He isn’t a kid though he has played at a pretty high level and showed he could do well there no idea why dyche played him against Roma then keane against Brighton

I’m feel pretty safe in saying he’s better than Michael Keane tbh.

Will be the back up when Branthwaites back.

Won't be seeing Keane after that hopefully.

I don't think anyone's said he's not very good, if you're referring to me I'm saying he's a complete unknown.

On here it seems complete unknown = answer to all our problems, when that's not necessarily the case.

I'm all for players earning their place to, just as Branthwaite was made to and look how that turned out.

I have no idea what O'Brien's actual level is, and I'm pretty sure no one on here does either... There can't be calls either way at this stage, and he needs to earn his place in the team and then perform well enough to retain it which is as it should be.

He either will or he won't, none of us have any real idea because he's not played yet.
