Same gossip every year to generate traffic from gullible fans like us who keep lapping it up - both the negative and positive

Re: Hayden Hackney
Not arsed 1 way or the other. No clue if hes worth 7m or 20. We should only pay what we think hes worth though
The problem is always that weve no faith theyll make the right decisions because weve been consistently wrong

Re: Hayden Hackney
Nothing to flap over here. We were never going to be the only team interested in championship player of the season, with them not being promoted and with 1 year left on his contract. This is just where the project pitch is crucial as well our willingness to match the fee. We likely went in lower because we got a feel that we might be his preferred destination, as you would in any negotiation when you have some leverage. Nothing to see here, at least not yet.

Re: Hayden Hackney
Yeah, I’m fine missing out on him if we refuse to pay over the odds, which £25m for a 24 year-old championship player in the last year of his contract is really.
If we then switch our attention to just the Soucek’s and Wan-Bissaka’s and other ageing prem proven players, I’ll feel a bit crestfallen, though.

Re: Hayden Hackney
I mean, if Palace had spent £40m on Wharton then it would still be worth it now, so I think if you have the opportunity to sign a quality player who is still going to have value then you should take it.
Hackney is clearly a talent. If it's £20-25m because he's in the last year of his contract then that's an opportunity. If we did buy him then his true value is probably £30-40m under a decent contract length.
As Sam says, we'll probably end up spending £15m for Soucek who is 31. Who represents better value for money?
Whether he wants to come to us or not, if Palace get a bid accepted by Boro then he'll end up there. Low-balling only really works if you're a top club.

Re: Hayden Hackney
The issue is though that if the reported £50m transfer kitty is indeed true, and we acted as people on here demand, we'd sign George and Hackney for £25m each.Shogun wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2026 10:38 am I mean, if Palace had spent £40m on Wharton then it would still be worth it now, so I think if you have the opportunity to sign a quality player who is still going to have value then you should take it.

So it doesn't really work. Of course we could play Jake at RB again all season, but people also don't want that (for obvious reasons).
We struggle with getting these types of signings done because they impact on other transfers too, and it's a juggling act of getting everyone in within a tight budget.
Perfect world we'd just pay what they want and get it sown up before anyone else can, but I'd imagine we're quite far off what they value him at.
Re: Hayden Hackney
And this truth is what annoys me. It feels quite naive to me if our transfer committee are on the line of thinking of "Hayden really wants to join Everton, that's in our favour. I bet he'd love to play at the Hill Dickinson! He'll make the move happen" whilst we're 13th in the league and seemingly in a bidding war with one of the clubs we know of being Palace who are winning things and in Europe next season again.AjaxAndy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2026 10:54 am The issue is though that if the reported £50m transfer kitty is indeed true, and we acted as people on here demand, we'd sign George and Hackney for £25m each.

If we're bidding below their valuation and other clubs are involved who are closer to their valuation then just forget about it and move on. As you say, we've got a tight budget and the window only gets more expensive the longer it goes on.
Stop wasting time trying to get the ultimate bargain and either pay the money they want or move onto the next target which at any competent club would be a similar profile player who maybe a bit less proven.

Re: Hayden Hackney
Unless we make it worth their while, I’d imagine Boro would be happy to keep him and have another crack at promotion. It’s a gamble on their end as he could leave for free next season but with promotion worth £150m and other teams in for him, I don’t think £15m cuts it.

Re: Hayden Hackney
Don’t think Moyes fancies Garner as a single pivot, we certainly haven’t tried it much if at all. He’s sat a fair bit but always with another rat around type midfield near him in Tim or Gana.
