Seems like 99% of the population all think this is the correct lineup, and for some reason Southgate is in the 1% that thinks we should go with Gallagher and keep Foden on the left

Re: England National Team
Didn't see the Slovenia match but everybody is so focused on individuals. It makes sense when it's CM where the options available all have plenty to prove but apparently it's all about Cole Palmer now and how he HAS to play?
If that happens then one of Kane, Saka, Foden and Bellingham is coming out of the team and they are all brilliant players. They haven't just decided to join the Euros team and play a bit rubbish all of a sudden for a laugh. Palmer would suffer from the same issues if he was starting.
The media are really skirting around the elephant in the room which is Southgate not being a good enough coach.
I see Mainoo came on and did well, so he might actually stumble on a team that works in the knockouts but my god he's out of his depth with this squad.

Palmer had the novel attributes of actually trying to take players on (quite successfully), running and movingShogun wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 12:43 am Didn't see the Slovenia match but everybody is so focused on individuals. Gordon the same to a lesser extent as he only had 10mins
For whatever reason the starting lineup he picks is just so slow and static, is that because they’re being told to play a patient buildup, whatever they do don’t leave themselves open?
Re: England National Team
Yeah he was really poor yesterday, just jogging about not getting involved and not tracking back. Looked goosed.
Foden on the other hand really tried and was on the ball loads.
Would Southgate have the balls to drop Bellingham? Nope!

Re: England National Team
He’s clearly one of our best players, but Southgate needs to look at that and ask why he played so badly and then move him back alongside Rice surely, unless it’s all fitness based
Re: England National Team
Feel like Palmer is the latest to get massively overhyped.
Very good player, but it’s like he’s the answer to all our problems.

Re: England National Team
Southgate has always been a limited manager, and whilst he's done a lot of good things with England he's always been found out once we play a team whose manager has more tactical nous.
He's also been somewhat fortunate that whilst the quality of players he's had available have been good but not maybe amazing , the pieces have all fit together well, with our best players almost picking themselves and the formation being very logical as a result of good balance amongst those better players.
He's now in a situation where his limited tactical ability has really come home to roost. He has absolutely no idea how to make this group of players work. A better manager would have figured it out by now, and not been fumbling around in the dark hoping something sticks.
We have an attacking group of players that must have scored something like 120 goals between them this season, and we've scored just TWO in three games against very average opposition. That statistic alone is extremely damning.
Then there's the subs... Yesterday was the first time we've seen Palmer, Mainoo and Gordon. In the first match he brought on Bowen who played well, nearly set up a goal but now Palmer is the preferred option off the bench? Why?
It just all feels so random. Close your eyes, throw your darts and hope one hits the board somewhere decent.
We have no penetration, no left side, a player who won La Ligue player of the year looking like he's playing in lead boots, three different number 8s in 3 matches... Even the right side which should be dangerous isn't because Walker is mainly playing as a right sided CB when we're in possession leaving Saka outnumbered.
I'm genuinely lost on what Southgate is trying to do and I don't think it's much of a reach to say he's the same in this regard.

Re: England National Team
Something definitely off with him last night.
Him and Kane were constantly bickering and neither seemed to pass to the other.
Last two games Bellingham’s attitude out there has been poor.
Maybe time to bring him out for a bit?
Re: England National Team
Hmm... May well be a family emergency, but lso wouldn't be completely surprised if he's lost some of the dressing room.
Every possibility he's had a falling out with Southgate over his role in the team.
Hopefully not but it doesn't seem a particularly happy camp this time round.

Re: England National Team
Sorry should have posted the update regarding Foden - hope all goes well for him and his family.
