Absolutely.
But all fans are like this as BD says.
It’s tiresome and I try to ignore it. I don’t particularly care what rio Ferdinand or Micah Richards have to say on anything.
Yeah that was it, strange phrasing from Gareth, and I'm not sure it was based on reality either, given Pickford's opposite number didn't save any of their five and in many shoot-outs keepers don't save any of the first 5, moreso penalty takers actually miss the target.
I took it that the ‘goalkeeper will always make at least one save’ comment was referring to Pickford and his recent record in shoot outs. It did seem a bit odd at the time that he mentioned all the scorers by name but don’t think there was anything in it…May just have been me but I thought Southgate was quite defensive and seemed ill at ease throughout the whole press conferenceCods wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 5:46 am Yeah that was it, strange phrasing from Gareth, and I'm not sure it was based on reality either, given Pickford's opposite number didn't save any of their five and in many shoot-outs keepers don't save any of the first 5, moreso penalty takers actually miss the target.
Not suggesting anything other than possible deflection, and probably didn't want to attract more focus on Jordan and his water bottle.
Could even be a subtle message to the players that the keeper often saves penalties in shootouts and to not worry about missing as usually someone will?Cods wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 5:46 am Yeah that was it, strange phrasing from Gareth, and I'm not sure it was based on reality either, given Pickford's opposite number didn't save any of their five and in many shoot-outs keepers don't save any of the first 5, moreso penalty takers actually miss the target.

Yep, agree with that, as before I just thought it was a strange way of referencing, but not referencing, your own keeper who has a name, like everyone else he specifically named that took part in the shoot out. It kind of sounded (on the surface at least) to me like how a non-English manager (picturing Mourinho) might begrudgingly address the opposition keeper who had a good game after a loss, rather than highlighting a star player who performed very well. The respect and admiration for all of his players, particularly Pickford, is self-evident.Bluedylan1 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 6:03 am I really think there's nothing in it. Southgate has been unerringly loyal to Pickford for years, despite many times he has faced criticism, and has always selected him and relied on him for tournaments and big games. And in return Pickford has always delivered.
When he says ''the goalkeeper will always make at least one save'', he's not talking about general goalkeepers. He's referring to Pickford as his goalkeeper, and he's saying that he will always save at least one penalty (something I've heard said about Pickford by other people). It's a mark of respect.
