Re: Andre Gomes
Worked about as hard as he's capable in terms of closing down, won the ball well in a few places and won the free kick that he scored.
A bit wasteful in the final third but significantly less guilty of that than the rest of the midfield who all made terrible choices or failed to execute on multiple occasions.
We struggled to press because in part, it was gomes doing it rather than doucs, and because of their shape and how they used the extra man at back fairly effectively.

Re: Andre Gomes
Would start him over garner now I think.
Both players are guilty of being bad at the same things but Gomes at least has the ability to put his foot on the ball and produce moments of quality.

Re: Andre Gomes
What you gain with Gomes you also lose. Garner might not be great with the ball, but his defensive work is really good, and you'd lose that with Gomes in there.
Can't be arsed watching people just walk through the midfield again like we had for multiple seasons.
Doucoure is out for a few weeks it seems so I fully expect to see Gomes in the 10 so he'll get some game time in the coming weeks, but shouldn't ever be anywhere near the Garner or Onana positions.
Re: Andre Gomes
Yeah, Gomes has only been playing in the 10 and that's because he can't be trusted defensively to play any further back. Luckily he's actually become a squad player considering Doucs' injury issues at the moment.

Re: Andre Gomes
He usually gives away free kicks near the box and we suffer for it. Makes a nice change to have him win a free kick then we score from it.
Re: Andre Gomes
More lace slipper than traction engine, as he curled and caressed it in off the post, but ok.
Re: Andre Gomes
Ideal player for those games we are expected to win and don’t, as we have no way of picking the lock of a team defending and we have more possession. For the majority of games though when the opposite is the case and we play on the break, he’s less than ideal. Might be the guy to lay it on a plate for DCL to finally score of his arse though.
Re: Andre Gomes
Really don't know where this impression of Andre as being creative comes from. He can stroke a ball around all day, and he can twat one once or twice edge of the box, but he isn't like a de bruyne or fernandes who wants to thread a pass into the box.
Re: Andre Gomes
Yeah his passing is largely wasteful, although he has good technical ability so you'd expect him to be able to play killer through balls, but generally he can't.
He's still probably the most likely out of anyone but his passing can be really loose and frustrating.
I remember when Lampard first took over and the training vids of Gomes passing between the lines in drills had everyone drooling. Never actually translated to a match situation though.
I've defended Gomes loads in the past, but he is actually pretty poo as a player.
Hoping we see something different though if he gets a run in the team because he did play really well in that role on his first game back, was terrible the next, so I'm not holding my breath.
Re: Andre Gomes
I wouldn't say it's wasteful like he's got a great switch in his locker, he probably is the best passer at the club he's just not *that* adventurous, particularly in terms of like breaking lines and creating chances.AjaxAndy wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 4:13 pm Yeah his passing is largely wasteful, although he has good technical ability so you'd expect him to be able to play killer through balls, but generally he can't.

People often seem to think of him as like I dunno some kind of silky line breaker but he's just not
Re: Andre Gomes
Yeah that's definitely what I meant but didn't articulate well... Can switched play well, but if you're asking for someone to slip a striker through he seems to waste those passes.brap2 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2024 5:06 pm I wouldn't say it's wasteful like he's got a great switch in his locker, he probably is the best passer at the club he's just not *that* adventurous, particularly in terms of like breaking lines and creating chances.

He's technically a very good player who should be able to slip the striker in, but just can't for whatever reason.
