When you have a tough job you can't afford to make mistakes like spending £33m on Beto and Maupay. For those 2 alone I'd much prefer we entrusted the future spending to a new person.

It's never been an easy job for him, but I also don't think he's done a particularly good job. When I think of some of the players we signed under Moyes for very low fees and how we still won't have loads to spend it makes me want someone who can identify players like modern day Arteta, Jags, Coleman etc. Give me a person with a track record of spending well under tight budgets, not someone who's had a very mixed bag and wasted a large chuck of what little we did have on unsuitable players.

He's since then scored 11 and 26 for Stuttgart, then been sold to Dortmund where he has 6 in 12 in the league and 6 in 6 in the CL.

Sure but then he went 'oh well couldn't get that guy so I'll use £25m on this other guy who's a million miles away from being a premier league footballer, we can maybe rotate him with the other guy I bought who's wholly unsuitable and a complete bell end'.

He's identified some good players we didn't buy, but he also for some reason identified Maupay and Beto which is surely about as sackable offence as you can get.

I think Thelwell wouldn't lose too much sleep if we told him we're going in a different direction.

Not convinced but hard to know given finances and h9w his hands have been tied.

I do think we have needed a big win (ie bought for £10M-£15M and sold for £40M+) for awhile and we have struggled to get that.

Our big sales have been big buys (Richy and Onana) or players brought in at effectively academy level or through the academy just above (Branthwaite now and Gordon recently).

I dont mind the Onana and Richy type transfers but upside financially is not huge unless they become a PL leading player.

I’m pretty sure Maupay was at the very bottom of a shit list, but we needed somebody as we had no forwards and the season had started iirc. And similar with Beto, we got him cos he cost us nothing for the first season and again we needed something.

What’s the success rate for any signing in this league? 50% of signings must bomb? There’s always going to be a few duds, especially the markets we’ve been working in.

The list of permanent signings really isn't to had. His loan signings have been shite though and beyond the individuals we are still completely unbalanced.

I'd rather he went. His good signings are only really decent value and no more and he's no real pedigree before he csme here

Would defo keep and extend him. His instincts in the market are very good on the whole.

Would love to see him with a bit of stability and financial backing.

Keep working at building the structure behind the scenes.

With a bit more money to spend in the market and a manager more aligned with a more modernised approach we should then be able to tell if he’s the right man for the new era.

Impossible to judge him so far imo.
