Yeah no idea how they keep doing it tbh!
General Transfer Thread
Re: General Transfer Thread
And if you get offered 200k a week (I have no idea if accurate, just a guess) you and your family are even more set.biziclop wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 2:01 pm I think a lot of people underestimate how much money 80k a week (a conservative estimate) actually is.
If you're on that, you already earn more in a year than the average person in a lifetime. If you sign a 5 year contract on that not particularly high salary, your entire family is set for life.
I think unless any of us have sat in that situation and been offered these eye-watering amounts it's very easy to be dismissive and suggest it's down to a lack of ambition.
Re: General Transfer Thread
What more could you do on 200k a week than 80k a week. You’re just acquiring wealth at that point.
Players are going there for the money and nothing else. Which is fine but don’t fall for the setting my family up for life line.
If you can’t do that on an average premier league wage then you’re doing something wrong.

I think that's incredibly harsh. He could stay at villa and incur a career changing/ending injury tomorrow. There's far more to consider for these lads.CannockPricey wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 4:20 pm @biziclop
Has put the point perfectly. If they were playing in league two and got the offer to go to Saudi i would have some understanding, if not entirely sympathy but as a PL professional, moving to an utterly shit league purely for money is greed, pure and simple for me. Hope Duran pulls out though if it means Villa breach FFP mind.
It sucks that we're in this position and that Saudi can make these offers with a sub standard product, but that's not on the players.
Re: General Transfer Thread
It's transformational wealth for your entire family, for generations. Bit daft to ask what more can you do. Loads.TheRam wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 9:20 pm What more could you do on 200k a week than 80k a week. You’re just acquiring wealth at that point.

Re: General Transfer Thread
It really isn't, not compared to 80k. As for the "your career can end at any point", first of all this isn't true, your contract would still be paid out but even if it were, would you voluntarily and definitely end your career at 21 for possibly slightly more money?

Re: General Transfer Thread
I think you’re just amassing wealth at that point.
What do you need on 200k a week that you cant get with 80k a week?
It’s pure greed and I think the players going over there at such a young age should be called out for it.
Don’t mind the older players doing it, particularly the Muslim ones as I imagine it’s a very attractive way to end your career.
A 21 year old striker as good as Duran though? Then again, I think the clubs will be doing their best to make them accept these moves as well. That fully sorts their PSR issues out without selling him to another premier league team.
Re: General Transfer Thread
I think that's an important factor, too.TheRam wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 11:04 pm I think you’re just amassing wealth at that point.

Look, I don't like it, so I'm not about to defend it to the hilt. But, I can appreciate it from a player's perspective. I don't think it's as easily labelled as greed.

Re: General Transfer Thread
Probably an element of greed but I also wonder if there is also an element of wanting to escape the pressure of the Premier League and other top leagues in Europe and Saudi Arabia offers an easier more lucrative payday (I don’t think they get taxed on income if I am correct).TheRam wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 9:20 pm What more could you do on 200k a week than 80k a week. Some play football because they love the sport and are ambitious to want to win silverware and make a name for themselves. Others probably fall out of love a bit for the professional sport and see being a footballer mainly as a job that earns them money so an offer to Saudi Arabia in that case would be attractive.
Re: General Transfer Thread
Saudi will soon be the biggest, most watched league in the world. It’s inevitable.
