Let's stick Niasse in a Sean Dyche team and see how he gets on! DCL needed 39 matches to score 8 goals in all comps last season.

Getting a few minutes towards the end of matches in a Dyche team isn’t the best comparison.
The one thing he’s needed I think is a proper run in the team, it now looks like he’ll get that, but I’d like to see Lindstrøm and Ndaiye behind him instead of Doucoure, he needs balls to run on to.

Shogun wrote: Mon Jan 27, 2025 11:41 am Like most of the other players in the squad who we've only seen play under Dyche, I'm willing to give Beto a bit of a clean slate.

The runs in behind that DCL was making against Spurs to get 1 on 1 are definitely the sort of thing Beto can do and is more likely to result in a goal. Hold-up isn't near Dom's level, though you'd imagine Moyes is savvy enough to take that into account when setting up a team.

Dyche-ball was always going to be tough for someone with Beto's attributes but away from that I think it's worth backing the fella who scored 21 goals in 61 league matches for a Udinese side 12th over the course of both seasons he was there.

Feel like he's treated as though he's the level of Niasse sometimes. He's done it in a top 5 (arguably top 3) league.
It's unlikely we're likely to do much better in the January window. So yeah, he should get a chance. We hopefully will try to adapt to how we play the ball to him though as you say, as even though he's a big enough guy he's not DCL and seems to be better suited playing it to feet...and probably in that Deulofeu from the byline sort of way.

Beto has had plenty of opportunities in front of goal to score in the last couple of years. Even under Dyche.

Remember last season where our xG was massively above our actual output? Granted a lot of those chances were falling to Maupay but point is even with Dyche we’ve had plentiful chances to score.

DCL has been shocking as well for sure, but I always felt there was a corner to turn with Dominic. Beto, I have zero faith he will produce anything of real value for us, but not for the lack of trying.

I worry about him setting the press.

Didn’t think he did very well without the ball on Saturday. Low energy and basically let them play the ball out in whichever direction they wanted.

I’m sure it’s partly fitness since he hasn’t played that many minutes often since he signed. But still, an underrated part of DCL’s game that we cannot easily replace with internal options.

I really think we need to find a defensive workhorse to rotate with him. What we do without the ball is our primary strength and way more integral to our success than what we do with it. I’m not saying possession/attacking doesn’t matter, Moyes has bucked up our ideas a bit in that department and the results are promising, more that good defense/below average attack is our best recipe for safety. I don’t see how you make this a proficient passing/attacking team without a massive overhaul that won’t be happening this January.

Only thing Dom in some games didnt look to press either, whether through instruction or otherwise.

Kind of let them get out far too easily.

Not sure we've really pressed that effectively since Garner was in the team.

I felt we definitely pressed more effectively in both the Villa and the Spurs games, it was noticeable for me, without looking at any pressing stats.

So I'm taking that as a clear want from Moyes. Agree with Kramer, we need a striker who can play to this strength of ours. Doucoure, Lindstrom, Ndiaye, Gana, led by a striker. That man probably isn't Beto.

I agree with kramer too, just think we really had some good pressing setup up top at times when Garner was midfield pushing forward. We've sure been better the last two games, Spurs was particularly good all over the pitch, but still not wonderful.

Not sure it's as much as DCL not pressing, to me it was more about pressing as a unit. DCL would chase down a defender but it was mostly pointless as they could just switch to another unmarked teammate. The last 2 games we've been pressing as a unit, so the press becomes much more effective at either winning the ball or at least forcing the other team to go long as we've closed off the easy options.

It changed when DCL went off injured, but prior to that we had DCL, Doucoure, Mangala and Ndaiye all pressing high up. It really made a difference to how effectively we could press Vs just DCL doing it.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if Beto can do it as we immediately changed to a mid to low block the moment he came on and the system also changed to much more a standard 4-4-2. I'm hoping we can do it with him though as it was a lot more enjoyable watching us actively press high up as a team.

Hmmm.

I'd rather he was sold but we really need to make sure we have someone, possibly two strikers now, lined up.

Would have been lovely if it worked out and he went on a run of jelavic style goals but I just reckon he wants to go back to Italy and use his pace against 35 year old CBS who smoke rollies

this is all lovely except we would then need two players in, and we can barely find one of interest. These links are so annoying because they just completely ignore our actual reality

Beto has his issues, but hes fucking quick, strong, possibly a better natural finisher than Dom (thats a low bar btw, notwithsatnding Doms strengths), and likes to run in behind. If we can address our hitherto relative inability to play to his srengths to date, then i believe hes got a better than 50% shot of delivering as many, if not a decent number more than, the goals we lose with Dom out

The key really is playing someone other than Doucs at 10. Perhaps the obvious best compromise is Jack harrison, who can get through a lot of the work doucs does, but is more composed on the ball. Id like to see Iliman there but would then have concerns about the LHS of the pitch.

We are likely, i think, to see doucoure attempting to fill mangalas boots for the next game or two while garner gets back to full fitness, so perhaps we will see something like this on saturday and know more by 5pm on the day, leaving Davey a full 54 hours before the window slams shut to get on it with the last minute incomings!
