I haven't read that but would be surprised if that was even legal? Surely when his contract is over then none of the clauses are relevant anymore?

Don't companies sometimes include clauses in employees contracts that they can't join a rival for x amount of time, after their contract finishes? Or is that just summat I've seen on TV, and it's not actually real?

I guess sell-on fees obviously stay intact as well but maybe that's a separate contract. I thought part of the Bosman ruling prevented clubs from holding any power over a player once their contract expires.

I'd imagine it's a clause that states if we 'renew' his contract we pay x amount.

We can't actually sign him on a free transfer as he's already our player, so any deal he signs would be classed as a renewal rather than a transfer.

No, that's genuinely a thing, I've got such a clause in my contract for example.

However afaik it is only really enforceable if you pay compensation for it because otherwise, as you say, your contract's up and that's it.

I don't know tho how all this works in the weird world of football player contracts, which seem to have its own special rules for everything.

We paid 3m for Gareth Barry after his contract ended.

The clauses are 40m total apparently. All that seems to be reported is 10m after 20 and another 10m after 40 games. I really wouldn't be surprised if there's a big fee if we renew him.

Just curious, based on?

Surely if he's out of contract. he's out of contract..? He's no longer a Spurs player. They shouldn't have a say after that point.

Probably not worth worrying about too much though at this point with so much unknown.

He's not a Spurs player though, he's ours... His contract is with us, so if we 'sign' him after it expires we aren't actually signing him as he's already our player.

The clause (which I worded badly) will be that if we renew his contract we pay x amount. Which is what we'd be doing if we have him a contract after this one expires.

Didn’t we release Pistone back in the day then re-sign him later on? Pretty sure that’s not classed as a contract renewal.

There wasn't any clauses in his transfer deal that said 'if player signs a new contract with your club at any point you owe us 💰💰💰'

So I don't see how they are comparable with regards what we'd owe Spurs tbh.

How do you know that clause is in Dele's contract though?

A free agent is a free agent as far as I know. You’re so dismissive of other opinions it’s hard to be bothered about the discussion tbh.

What kind of idiotic club would have him sat around on £100k+ a week burning a hole in their frankly infamously bad books without him kicking a ball for a year...only to then give him a signing on fee and get him back on the books!

Come on what are we saying here!
