Would have been great to get a pair of decent fullbacks in who can overlap and provide some actual attacking presence, the opposition would be tied up in knots.

Think the point is you always have a full back stay deep so you have a three in defence for when you get countered.

That pass map looks ok but we are wide open in the middle park so if he wants midfielders getting in the box he needs his fullbacks playing deeper.

We bought neither a sitting midfielder or attacking fullbacks to make the make the most of the holy trinity mk.2

It also means that teams bunch over there and leave Ndiaye ImagevsImage where he’s most dangerous as a solo runner

I think teams are going to start sitting a bit deeper against us and allowing us a bit more possession to counter both Grealish and N’Diaye. I think if you allow either of them too much space, they will really hurt you.

If teams don’t tighten up and allow that space against the full backs then we will continue to do very well

That pass map isn’t average position for the match, it’s average position for passes played/received.

Even against Leeds when the players on the pitch were substandard, there’s been a concerted effort to build from the back through the fullbacks. We are clearly trying to work overloads on each flank, draw the defense over to that side, and then move the ball quickly to the other flank where there’s space to create a chance. This is a pretty common attacking principle, overload the flank opposite the one you intend to score on.

Our CMs are high and wide on the pass map but that’s not what we look like on a giveaway. Gana and Garner have a solid understanding where, when one of them gets high and wide to support the creative midfielders, the other stays central and deeper so we’re not completely exposed.

Wolves needed our defense to switch off on the flank and at the back post to create decent chances. Obviously, they’re not very good but the point is we’re really not soft structurally with our preferred midfield. It’s the largely same base that was hard to score against under Moyes last season (minus the currently-injured Branthwaite and Mykolenko at times). All we’ve done is replace Ndiaye with Grealish, Doucoure with KDH, and Harrison with Ndiaye. Lost a bit of physicality in the middle but the technique, movement, and footballing intelligence has increased massively.

The problem is despite all the activity in the market, we’re still on a knife-edge where if any of our first eleven go missing, the balance is potentially spoiled. Röhl, Dibling, and Aznou will help with this as the season goes on but they all need time to acclimate before they can be as reliable as the starters.

If my team allowed Grealish and Illi possession I’d be fuming.

Problem is.. going tight doesn’t work either. They are just that good

If we keep them fit and they remain as committed as they are now teams will always struggle against them regardless of tactics.

What a time to be alive : )

In keeping with the Southall & Pickford debate.

It's too early to have an answer, but there's every reason to think:
Grealish - KDH - N'Diaye > Pienaar - Osman - Arteta

He's been a breath of fresh air. Was plenty of worries that he wouldn't be motivated or would think he's doing us a favour. Beyond him being brilliant on the pitch he's been a great spokesperson for the club and appears to be a really decent guy
