Development Vs Impact

Post

I think it's interesting to see the divided opinions on players like Barry and Alcaraz where some are willing to give them time and games to develop and others aren't seeing their potential and therefore not so keen.

What do people want us to be as a club? Would you sacrifice points for not only developing young players but then being more attractive to young players as a result, or would you happily just get a few plug and play types to kick us further on in the short term?

Personally I think providing they're willing to put the work in to develop and are at least giving us something half decent on the pitch I'd rather we stuck with them than limit their game time for a more experienced but ultimately short term fix.

I think with someone like Aznou the gains wouldn't be worth it at this stage, but others I'd rather finish 14th and continue to develop them than finish 9th with some loanee or low cost older player taking their game time.

Let's hear your opinions!

Absolutely happy to drop a few points for developing young players. The problem is like you say if you arent seeing the potential then they arent worth the sacrifice. Id play alcaraz. I think he contributes enough already. Barry I think needs replacing if we can. Hes not ready and for me probably never will be.

What you have to take into context is the bigger picture….at the end of the day we’re a business and as a business the higher up the league we finish the more income is generated….the more income generated the better standard of player we can attract…so that’s a double edged sword….
i’m all for development of young players but not at the sacrifice of points/league position / income in that order.
The other side of the development issue is young players also learn a lot off established experienced pros…training with them…being around them….and obviously playing alongside them when possible…..

I think Charlie is coming along fine the way he’s being managed….we can all see the improvement in Barry’s play already…a goal takes him to the next level of his development….cant really discuss aznou as we’ve not seen too much of him….same with dibbling…but I bet if you asked them they probably say they’re learning a lot of the established players and Davey moyes.

Developing players gets you more income though. You can sell for a few mill, rather than just let them go on a free.

The point here is not just about developing players….it seems to be about sacrificing points and league position in favour of developing them…and yes you can sell them on but at what cost ? Cost of development + Potential PROFIT on sale V league position = Premier league income + better status + Better TV income…..not adding potential revenue should you get into Europe competitions…

I think every team needs to strike their own balance on this.

And as Barry is our best striking option at the moment it’s kinda moot til January.
