Gary Lineker

Gary LinekerLineker was sigend in the summer of 1985 for a record fee of £850,000. His arrival brought an end to Andy Gray’s days at the club. Unlike Gray, Lineker was an instinctive poacher who player “off the shoulder of the last defender” or so the jargon goes. He amassed goals but despite his prolific tally, Lineker struggled to win the hearts of the fans.

Even though Lineker displayed clinical finishing to completment his lightening pace, the reigning champions ended the 1985/86 campaign as bridemaids in the League and FA Cup – bother were conceded to the reds. Revered as a national hero, he never caught the imagination of the Goodison faithful. To exacerbate matters, he stunned everyone during the World Cup summer by negotiating a £2.75m move to Barcelona.
