Much more than a footballing comic, Bailey was an invaluable member of Howard Kendall’s squad. Signed by Gordon Lee for £300,000, the stylish full back was comfortable on the ball and loved to overlap. His game was built on skill rather than steel but, as a consequence, he lost his first team place following the arrival of Pat Van den Hauwe.

One of football’s most colourful characters, Bailey was renown for raising his team-mates’ spirits both on and off the pitch. Under Howard Kendall, he excelled as the first choice left-back and played no small part in two Wembley finals. While sound defensively and enterprising pushing forward, he was restricted to only a handful of outings during the intoxicating 1984-85 season.
