Martin Dobson

Martin DobsonRecruited from Burnley for a massive fee of £300,000, Dobson was a consummate pro who exhibited all of the midfield talents required to unlock defences. He played with an easy elegance and, it appeared, well within himself. So much so that many think Dobson failed to realise his full potential. Possibly, the huge price tag weighed heavily on his shoulders.

Billy Bingham smashed the British all-cash transfer record to sign Dobson who became a key part of the Goodison set-up for five years. Sadly he failed to capture any silverware during his stay. Of course, Dobson came close. In his first season, Everton inexplicably relaxed their grip on the title and finished three points behind champions Derby. Two years later, an FA Cup semi-final and a League Cup final also ended in tears.
