Thelwell confirmed by Rangers. We might not look so bad after all when he sees the carnage at Rangers.

Be funny if Rangers get bought out and they bin him off in a couple of weeks

Without being a tit here, why would that be funny?

He's done a good job here Thelwell, hasn't he?

Yeah, I wish him the best.

Maybe some of the signings he made are a bit underwhelming in terms of upside but they can all be on the pitch in a Premier League match without completing sabotaging the team. Sadly, that’s enough to make them good by the standards set by Moshiri and the managers and other directors of football he hired.

He clearly understands player value and the importance of age profiles. Rock solid as someone overseeing your club, I think he’ll continue to do well.

I understand that Moyes is hands-on in pretty much all aspects of running a club (and also that he’s quite good at it) but I worry that we will once again be left without a succession plan when he’s done. A bit disappointed to see this role disappear with Thelwell.

Yeah he done an okay job. Only so much you can do in that role as well sometimes. Someone like O'Brien would have been considered a dud only a few months ago, new manager comes in and he's now a great investment.

Did sign Beto and Maupay for £40m though, so I'm reticent to give him too much praise.

Signed:

Tarkowski
McNeil
Garner
Onana
Gueye
Maupay
Chermiti
Beto
Iroegbunam
O'Brien
Ndiaye
Begovic
Young

Loaned:

Coady
Vinagre
Danjuma
Harrison
Mangala
Broja
Lindstrom
Alcaraz

I think that is pretty solid given the finances.

Kids loaned out:

Harry Tyrer: Chester and Blackpool.
Stanley Mills: Oxford United.
Elijah Campbell: Ross County.
Billy Crellin: Accrington Stanley.
Francis Okoronkwo: Salford City.
Jenson Metcalfe: Chesterfield.
Bradley Moonan: Prescot Cables.
Reece Welch: Deinze.
Harrison Armstrong: Derby County.
Halid Djankpata: Spezia.
Lewis Warrington: Fleetwood Town and Leyton Orient (later released).
Lewis Dobbin: Derby County (later sold).
Tom Cannon: Preston North End.
Lewis Gibson: Bristol Rovers.
Ryan Astley: Accrington Stanley.
Tyler Onyango: Burton Albion and Forest Green Rovers, and Stockport County.
Jarrad Branthwaite: PSV Eindhoven.

He has also arranged loans out for the following (removing some of their wages in the process):

Dele Alli: Beşiktaş.
André Gomes: Lille.
Jean-Philippe Gbamin: Trabzonspor.
Joao Virginia: SC Cambuur.
Niels Nkounkou: Cardiff City and Saint-Étienne.
Mason Holgate: West Bromwich Albion.
Neal Maupay: Marseille.

Including loan fees, he has turned a £90m PROFIT on player trading since he came in. (Big old asterisk here to say it has been calculated by an LLM)

Yeah. It was some serious choppy waters he came into.

He did what was needed. Kept the squad competitive enough to keep us in the league while seriously reducing wages and turning a profit in player sales.

Not his fault during his time here he was hampered by having to pay for everything on Klarna.

Let's be real here, we only ended up with Beto because Udinese were one of the few clubs happy with allowing us to defer payments to the next financial year, that's the type of job he was up against.

No ill will from me, did what was needed, fairwell.

Spent about 25% of his overall outlay on Beto.

I thought it weren't for that I'd be more inclined to say he'd done a good job in difficult circumstances.

As it stands I'd say he did an ok job because the one black mark against his name is a pretty massive one. He also thought signing Maupay was a good idea.

Most of the outs have been end of contracts so nothing major done there, did flip Onana for profit but it was one of those where the initial outlay was too high to make significant money on the deal.

Difficult circumstances for sure though, I'm happy we haven't decided to keep him though, was probably a good fit for where we were but not where we want to be

Didn’t it come out that he had nothing to do with signing maupay and it was the club just going out and signing someone with premier league experience?

Dunno, haven't heard that tbh but as it was only I think £8m it's not the biggest black mark against him even if he sanctioned it. The Beto one will always be the lasting image I have of his time in my mind. Pretty criminal given our limited funds and the lasting impact it'll have on our PSR over the length of his contract.

We might be able to sell in the summer but it won't be for anything like we paid. If we can recoup £15m then I'd say it's a bad buy we didn't lose too much on, but I expect him to be here for a while and be another player we have hanging around where we paid silly money for and couldn't then shift.

Think his work has aged well or at least better.

Lots of poor loans and lots of money wasted on very questionable strikers

I think as a whole he's done an okay job

Fun fact about Neal Maupay.

Iliman Ndiayes season at Everton (7 goals 0 assists) ranked against Neal Maupays prem seasons, would rank as Maupays second worst ever season. Trailing only behind his 2022/23 Season 1 goal (Everton).
