First and Last Game at Goodison

Post

Straight forward enough, what was your first and last game at Goodison, what was the score and where did you sit? I'm hoping we'll have oldies. :)

I was late in getting to Goodison by the time any of us had a decent enough car to do the journey.

First game was December 1998, Chelsea, 0-0, Denis Wise sent off for them and Richard Dunne sent off for us, sat near the corner of the Lower Gwladys which is now the wheelchair seats.

Last game was Bournemouth, August 2024, lost 3-2, enough said. Sat in the Upper Away section of the Bullens Road.

My story is different to most in that I have only been to Goodison on 5 occasions, but have sat in all 4 stands.

In fact, I'd seen us play at Anfield twice (first time was the Kevin Campbell 1-0 win) before i'd ever set foot in Goodison Park. I'd probably been to about 20 away games in London before that too.

The 2 games that stood out were when Rooney made his debut against Spurs as a 16 year old in a 2-2 draw, and a high scoring win against Blackpool when Saha bagged 4.

My first game was the 3-1 win over KR Reykjavik in 1995. We were pretty poor, 1-0 down at half time, and the second half comeback was marred by Amokachi getting carried off on a strectcher to hospital.

My dad, RIP, took me too my first few games (even though he was a rugby league fan), so I can't tell you how happy I was that I was able to visit Goodison one last time this season for the Leicester battering, and made it my son's first (and only!) game. Here's to many more at Bramley-Moore!

First...
Everton 1-1 Middlesbrough
November 2008
Bullens Road
The Yak was fed by Arteta, and he duly obliged. This after Gary O'Neil had initially looked like he might spoil the party.
Beautiful crisp, sunny day. Met @Si outside, who looked after us kindly organising tickets, had a good chat, Si pointed out the sites, and amongst others, the giant John Ruddy walking down Goodison Road... thanks mate! The decades long wait to finally see a game, live, at Goodison, had finally arrived.

(Got to squeeze this in here, the only other ground I've been to, the Boelyn ground the week prior, and also now decommissioned, ...watched us come back from 1-0 down against the Hammers in the last 10 minutes, for us to score 3 in 4 minutes to do them 1-3! I have never seen such a wonderful euphoric, frothing, boiling, mess of berserkers in the away end, their energy was beyond description. Loved it.)

Last...
Everton 2 - 2 Man United
February 2025
Main Stand
Another beautiful crisp blue sky. We were robbed. As everyone said to us walking through town after the game. The main stand rose, as it had done a few times, blocking what was a definite penalty from our witness! 😉

Another little Evertonian was made that day,... well, not in the @Deano Blue Boy sense, but more in that Goodison was the beginning, the solidification, the awe, the excitement, the raw emotion... the passion. "So this is what Dad has been on about"

Thanks Goodison, thanks Toffees!

Glad I'm not the only one with absolutely no idea what my first game was.

https://www.espn.co.uk/football/match/_ ... ty-everton is the earliest I have a vague memory of watching but not sure that would have been my first unless I had a half-season ticket and that was the tester.

Strongest that stands out to me memory wise as a 'first' game is the 3-4 defeat against United that season and feeling like I was going to fall about 10 rows in front when we made it 3-3. That game probably sums up the following 20 years tbf!

2-2 Ipswich is the last.

First game 2003 Wolves. 2-0 Radzinski and Kilbane. The day England won the rugby WC.

Last game March 2025. West Ham 1-1

Late comer to attending Goodison as i'd covered the London away grounds with Everton the prior 10 years. Notably QPR four seasons on the bounce.

First game was a 2-0 win over Derby County in 1990, both goals came in the last 10minutes. Remember being terrified at how loud it was, was in the Gwladys street and could hardly see anything. My Dad kept telling me to go to the front with all the kids and I was too scared to leave his side

Last game was the 3-1 win against Burnley a few years ago, most memorable for Andros Townsends worldy strike for us, or maybe for future Everton captain James Tarkowski leaving one on Richarlison!

Happy to leave on a high note with that win, even though it was in the dark days of Rafa Benitez. Sad that I couldn’t make it to more games in recent years

Loads of great memories, including randomly sitting next to @Bally against Hull and him giving me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek when he realised it was me, before we witnessed the first Goodison goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin
