It's a high risk signing as you're basing his ability to play in the PL on a very small sample of work but the issue for us, where we are as a club, is if you wait until he's more proven, we can't afford him. There is a real risk he's James Beattie but he might go off and score 60 in the next three years for whoever picks him up now. There probably aren't (m)any targets we could get with that sort of ceiling as an alternative.

I'm not nailing my colours to the mast and saying he's the next Shearer because I don't think he is, but there's a real chance he becomes worth more than his current asking price.
In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.

At 22, he's still a good few years away from his peak. At £30m, it's actually a pretty low risk punt. I think he'll likely go to Utd or Chelsea, but if he does decide to come to Evwrton, I'll be more than happy.

I think the pressure of being at Utd will destroy him if he goes there. Yes, they will pay him top dollar, but that club is fucked from top to bottom.

Chelsea might also be the wrong move for him. Again it's a high pressure move. Like Utd, they’ll pay big wages, but there will also be a very heavy weight of expectation.

Here, he will be the big fish. He'll be expected to produce the goods, but not quite at the same level as he would at Utd or Chelsea. If he came here and got into double figures in his first season - very achievable - he would be considered a decent signing. If he starts banging them in for fun,, he will still have his pick of suitors and will command an even bigger fee.

No one has really put together a strong case on here as to whether he will be a success or failure. I dont think anyone has watched him enough to really know.

Lets be honest we chat a lot of shite.

Nice to be back in a financial state where we're debating a player who has to choose between us, Man UTD and 2 champions league teams isn't it?

If he didn't have the release clause then we wouldn't be in for him as Ipswich would be asking £40-50m for him, which is the position we'd be in in 12 months time if we managed to get the same return out of him. If he managed that in the bag of shite Ipswich team you'd have to back ourselves to be able to create as many if not more chances for the lad[Barring injury].

We've also got a 6'4" wrecking ball to bring on late in games against tiring defences to replace him which could actually be a master stroke in itself. 70 minutes of rough and tumble with Delap and then you get Beto coming on fresh? Don't think many defences would fancy that.

Let's be honest £30m for a centre forward is not massive money. £30m for a 22 year old English centre forward with PL experience is no money. Of course all of the usual suspects are going to be sniffing around. It all comes down to whether the player is interested in our project and wants to be the big fish.

All part of the fun.

Maybe, ultimately, the point of it all.

It's a large wage demand, but that's also a function of the low transfer fee (the agent will be aware you are getting a bargain on that front, obviously). And there do appear to be multiple, active suitors.

Not convinced he is a special talent, but who knows.

Perhaps some members of the forum have spotted fundamental flaws in his game that Everton, Man Utd, Chelsea, Newcastle and others have all overlooked.

Not much point in a forum if we aren't allowed to have opinions on players once more qualified people have spoken

We look even more silly when you name the clubs. I mean utd everton and Chelsea have barely wasted a penny in decades

Echoing a lot of what’s been said here.

There’s underlying talent here. 12 goals for a club with a somehow even worse attack than ours. Seems to have a bit more about his game running with the ball which suits our counterattacking play away from home. All that and he’s available for less than what market value would typically be because of the release clause.

Even if he doesn’t perform well, he’s young enough that most of the fee can be recouped. (I say this assuming that the we won’t be offering him a wage that would make him unattractive for possible future clubs.)

Sensible behavior to make our best pitch to him. I think he’ll sign for a richer club and that’s fine but you don’t get many chances to sign a homegrown forward for less than he’d be worth in normal circumstances.

The fact is, if we get him, he’ll be somewhere between shit and bang average, but if he goes somewhere else he’ll be the next Lukaku for them. Thats just how the world works.
