Well there's obviously been some encouragement from his camp or we wouldn't be pursuing him. It's probably a small chance but you can't have it both ways. We either have ambition and try sign this kind of player or we don't... Going to have people moaning either way.
Is that not naive though?
Encouragement from the camp to push Liverpool to get a bid in....?
Who knows whats going on, I just think yes show ambition but don't be deluded.
"My first thought is yes, I'm surprised, because I think Everton's such a big club, with great traditions and the new stadium's an exciting move for us.
"But when you think again about it, we've been in or around the relegation positions for the last five years, not far off the bottom, so maybe there's been reasons for it."
This has exactly been my point.
Aiming for players way above our current station is a waste of time and we will end up scrabbling about.
Criminally negligent and a hallmark of the windows of Moyes's past. People are deluded if they think a top half finish is where: 1) we are within a good shout of achieving and 2) where prospective signings think we will finish.
Lets not gaslight ourselves into thinking young prospects won’t come to us.
They’ve been going to Brighton and the like for years; We just have to make sure, like them, that we are brave and ahead of the curve with data, and get these players in before they get their first proper move, rather than when they are already being talked about a lot.
We have been so lucky the past 3 years that the quality of promoted teams has been so poor otherwise we would have been gone but I think there is now a very saleable project there for us new stadium good coach stable environment great place for a player to come even to use us as a stepping stone for a year or two we are targeting the right type of player just need to get it done

It's been a long, long time since Brighton were considered amongst the favourites to go down at the start of a season.

Oh, are we one of the favourites?
Anyway, all I was saying was that we need to follow that model.
It may take a bit of time to establish and bear fruit, but not too long if we do it right and commit to it.
Just been reading an interview from Moyes on the BBC. He sounds very downbeat about the lack of signings and says we still need 5 more at least before the start of the season to make any impact. Sounds worrying?

For the last 3 or 4 years? yeah - that's a long time in football. Especially if you're an 18-24 year old.
Just because we're not this year we are not. But it would not take much for us to be up to our neck in shit come Christmas.
I dunno, dude, if a young player sees a club that has a mad brand new stadium, new owners, a coach that just got the perennial relegation scrappers comfortably to mid table, and are offering a decent wedge, a clear path to the first team, and an exciting vision of the future to display their talents, then yeah, I reckon a fair few will want a slice of it, like Aznou.
We’re in a much better position now so I do find it strange just how hard we are finding selling ourselves.
Do think we’d be in a better position if we kept thelwell.
He seemed to sell the club really well in difficult circumstances and I recall a lot of players writing really heartfelt messages on social media when he left so he was obviously really popular with the players.
This recruitment team at the moment are failing on a lot of fronts.

We did sign Onana after just about staying up.

In hindsight replacing the recruitment team and the structure on the cusp of the most important transfer window in our recent history was probably not the best idea.
We're not talking about the young kids like Aznou - i think Moyes is talking about getting the guys that increase the ability of the team on day one. The first teamers.
We need half a dozen of them and the guys we want see us as an absolute last resort.
Barry and Aznou have come at reasonable times and fit into the category you guys are talking about. They *could* play. But expectation is that they will grow into the team.
The flapping (of which Moyes is now part of) is around the starting XI against Leeds.

Not really true. We won 48 points each of the last two years. I don't feel incredibly lucky that ipswich, Southampton and Leicester went down rather than utd spurs and West ham. More disappointed if I'm honest

So what sort of “first team ready” players are you thinking of?
