Exactly why this one was never going to happen for us... They're going to be wanting the going rate for a winger and in this window that's £40m - £50m, but he's just come back from an ACL and there's no guarantee he's the same player or that he isn't going to suffer injuries as a result.

That's not something we could risk.

I think Brownhill would be one of those players who when you see him week in week out you rate him more than if you don't, he'd probably knock Garner out of the starting 11 and that creates squad depth.

Of course I'd prefer better, and he's already 29 so age profile is poor but at least he's free, rarely injured and likes to pass forwards.

Well the main benefit would be that he'd be coming in with no one having any kind of expectations from him at all, seeing as everyone's spent 3 summers saying he's shit.

Brownhill and Vardy on frees have made sense all summer.

Brownhill allows you to send Tim or Armstrong out on loan.

Vardy allows you to send Chermiti on loan.

Spend the rest of the money on a right winger, midfield anchor man, and right back and that is a comprehensive summer.

The midfield anchor lets you send the other of Tim and Armstrong out on loan, as well.

Was reading a Burnley forum about Brownhill as his contract was running down. Their opinions were basically that it was sad to lose him but doubted his ability to play in the Premier League despite a decent championship season.

Ben Doak to Bournemouth for 20 mil (plus 5 mil in potential add ons) seems a surprisingly not too inflated price. That's really what I would've expected for a lot of these up and coming mostly Championship experienced players.

Maybe we couldn't but at that price I'm slightly surprised given our winger search we weren't linked.

It’s not great if he comes in with an eye to being a regular starter but that sounds absolutely fine for a rotation/cover option.

You need some high floor players on your bench for emergencies.

We were never getting the fair price for him because of his club, unfortunately.

They don’t see us as trouble in the slightest but there are optics involved. You can’t be seen giving your oldest rival a fair deal for a player who could be quite good.

Bournemouth must get a bit of a frequent buyer’s discount at this point. I can’t imagine anyone’s spent more on Liverpool academy players. Solanke, Ibe, now Doak.

You do wonder whether clubs are just throwing money at any half decent player that moves, or if we are just slow/tight with money and missing transfers.

I would like to think that it’s because we are trying to get things right rather than just being tight with funds, but either way, we haven’t struck the right balance of risk in this window.

I think it’s just typical Moyes meticulousness.

At any given point in time, there are a number of players with the requisite quality for our needs that are on the move.

I think Moyes is especially obsessive over character. If he’s spending decent money, he wants to make sure the player is the right fit off the pitch as well as on it. He has a pretty solid track record of avoiding the situation where a player with quality comes in, has a good season or two, and immediately uses those one or two good seasons to angle for a bigger move.

Obviously, he’s bent this to attempt to rehab cheap players with world class ability (e.g. Drenthe) but it’s an exception with a clear purpose (trying to bag a caliber of player we could not afford under any other circumstances).

It’s a bit annoying but I don’t mind his obsession with stability after what we’ve been through under Moshiri.
It might get old in a year or two but it’s probably necessary for us right now.
