Neville Southall says hi.
Love Pickford, but Southall is still THE best goalkeeper I have ever seen live. Pickford's distribution with his feet is better, but Southall was just an absolute machine in every other area.
I can’t argue with that.. I love big Nev and he was indeed world class in his prime.
I personally prefer Pickford and I think it’s much harder to be a successful goalkeeper these days, especially the prem
I fucking love both of them although Big Nev is a bit of a tool these days. (Sorry blues)

I saw these highlights the other day for the first time - I'd seen the saves individually before, but not in the context of a single match, wow.

I think all 3 of them saves are routine saves for pickers.
He’s a master at saving pens for sure and the other 2 we see from Pickford week in week out in what has been a poor team for years.
We have had some incredible keepers at the club. It’s one area that we have been consistently strong in (apart from perhaps the late 90s with Myrhe and Gerrard etc etc).
Since I have been a fan, to have had Southall, Howard, Martyn and Pickford, the majority of which have had long successful records at the club is quite something.
Pickford has been absolutely outstanding for us over several seasons. But I refuse to choose between him and Southall. They have literally saved us for different reasons and should both be celebrated as such.
He is in the top 5 PL players we have ever had for me. To single handedly save the club from relegation not just once, but likely twice, is legendary stuff.
Southall was the best keeper in the world imo at one point. Pickford is great, maybe even the best keeper in the league. But Southall was different gravy.
Yep, Nev every time. Pickford is one of my modern heroes but I would happily argue that Nev was the best in the world in mid and late 80s. The old "it's harder today" argument cuts no ice really. Is Haaland better than Dixie? Van Dyck better than Bobby Moore? You can only genuinely be compared to your peers and Nev was the best. But I wouldn't swap Pickford for anyone today.
Pickford has a team in front of him that was capable of winning at the level the 80s teams were and I suspect this argument may be a bit closer than some of you would like to accept..
As it stands, Big Nev for me too.
But it's not actually that big a difference

Fair shout that, I'm with Nev too but he definitely spent less time single handedly keeping us in a game so I make you right, it is relatively close.
In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.

Nope. I love Pickford, best player (as in most important) since he joined the club. Won us more games and points than any of our attacking players.
But Southall was much better. He is the only player in my lifetime that was the best in the world in his position.
You couldn’t argue that Pickford is the best keeper in the world, you couldn’t even argue that he’s the best in the prem.
Big Nev was the world’s greatest and no amount of recency justification can bring Pickford any closer.
There's such a weird aura around Pickford. Like the dickheads constantly saying England have a keeper problem.
Why couldn't I argue he was the best in the prem?
I'm not having that there's physically any more any keeper on the planet could have done in goal for us over the last 5 years.
Not a solitary fucking one.
He hasn't been legitimately at fault for a goal since COVID.
He hasn't conceded a goal for England in 540 minutes. Over the time it has taken him to accrue those minutes every single game he hasn't played - England have conceded.

Tottenham away last season.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Pickford, best keeper since Southall, but Nev was the best, bar none.
