Tbf, England do have a keeper problem, namely that they don't have anyone else anywhere near Pickford's level yet.
Jordan Pickford

Re: Jordan Pickford
Oh yeah, but that stuff is only based on carefully measured statistics and objectivity!
Re: Jordan Pickford
Pickford will get more points because he has more saves to make.
For example, someone like Allison will get six points for a clean sheet but nothing else because he hasn’t had to make a save.
Pickford will get the clean sheet points and bonus points for having to make more saves.
It’s not really a reliable guide on who’s the better keeper.

Re: Jordan Pickford
Yeah, you could argue he's had to work harder for his 6 points for a clean sheet than Alisson has then, I suppose.TheRam wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 10:22 pm Pickford will get more points because he has more saves to make.

Anyway, it was just a throwaway stat, I know it means nowt. He was the league's highest scoring keeper last year, though, so must be doing something right.
Re: Jordan Pickford
Nev for me, all day. Credit to Pickford that we're even having the conversation though.

Mate - I agree with you. We watch him all season. But you have that discussion with a group of fans from all clubs and you’re getting shouted down.superpull wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 8:26 pm There's such a weird aura around Pickford. Like the dickheads constantly saying England have a keeper problem.
Why couldn't I argue he was the best in the prem?
I'm not having that there's physically any more any keeper on the planet could have done in goal for us over the last 5 years.
Not a solitary fucking one.
He hasn't been legitimately at fault for a goal since COVID.
He hasn't conceded a goal for England in 540 minutes. Over the time it has taken him to accrue those minutes every single game he hasn't played - England have conceded.
You have the same discussion in the 80s about Southall and most just agree with you when you say he’s the best in the world.
That’s the difference.

I didn’t have that experience regarding Southall when I was a kid. Jennings, Shilton, Clemence, and Banks were always lauded more.Toddacelli wrote: ↑Mon Sep 08, 2025 5:49 am Mate - I agree with you. Re: Jordan Pickford
Maybe geographical bias having gone to school in Nottingham, but Shilton was always the one in the conversation and even though they thought he was the best ever England goalkeeper since Banks, most would concede Southall was a touch better.

Re: Jordan Pickford
Hundred percent I have nostalgia specs on looking back at that era - who wouldn’t. Doesn’t take anything away from Southall, or the fact that pundits, not just me, would talk about him as the best in the world at that time.
Re: Jordan Pickford
Southall was the reason I was a keeper when I was little, an absolute legend.
I love Pickford but Southall was another level all together.
Best keepers I've ever seen are Southall and Peter Schmeichel, maybe add Oliver Khan in to that conversation too.
Pickford is a fantastic keeper, but Southall was genuinely world class.

Re: Jordan Pickford
Different generations. Can't compare. Nev was great but so is Pickford. Dixie Dean was a great goal scorer in his time but probably wouldn't get the same goals now.
Re: Jordan Pickford
Couldn't out jump 5ft 5in Maradonna even when he was the only one allowed to punch it, when England got knocked out of the world cup in 86.Toddacelli wrote: ↑Mon Sep 08, 2025 9:34 am Maybe geographical bias having gone to school in Nottingham, but Shilton was always the one in the conversation and even though they thought he was the best ever England goalkeeper since Banks, most would concede Southall was a touch better.
Fell on his arse backtracking for the ball that looped off Paul Parker in the wall when England got knocked out of the world cup in 90.
These are my abiding memories of Shilton, a goalkeeper who couldnt jump.

Southall was also the only goalkeeper to win the Football Writers' award back when it was quite a high profile award to win, if I recall.
