We bought Beto for the now and Barry for the future.Fynci wrote: ↑Sun Oct 05, 2025 6:01 pm I think the weight of expectations are massive, and it feels like he is feeling the pressure. In his first couple of appearances, he was creating space for others and making some great runs, now it feels like he is so low in confidence that he isn't even able to do that.
The reality is that he was probably bought for the future, and not for the now. Sadly, we need someone who is ready now.
Thierno Barry

Re: Thierno Barry
He's played nearly two full games of prem footy and hasn't set the world alight.
I'm done.
Ok, one and a half games, but still...
Anyway, how'd that lad go, the one that was linked with Man Utd, Liverpool and Barça last window, the one who's been called up to lead the line for the 2nd best international team in the world...?

Re: Thierno Barry
He deserved to be taken off at HT Sunday, but my God that will knock his confidence.
He really needs to bag a goal.

Re: Thierno Barry
I'll repost my comment from the Moyes thread as I think it's relevent to the discussion on Barry:
If you watch back the game yesterday it wasn't that Mateta was magically holding the ball up, it's that he wasn't under as much pressure from our CBs as they couldn't follow him as we were wary of the threat in behind of Pinot/Sarr/Munoz/Mitchell. Often Matata was receiving the ball with nobody within 5 yards.
Compare that to Barry/Beto trying to take in the ball with a defender or two touch tight on them and it's a way harder job. None of our wide options run beyond so opposition defences can just squeeze squeeze squeeze.
I guess my point is that even though Barry/Beto obviously have issues, if you drop Mateta into our lineup yesterday I don't think we look very different.

Re: Thierno Barry
I am just not sure what he's bringing to the table in terms of skillset.
With Beto, you can see he needs balls down the side which we saw at the back end of last season
But what do you play with Barry up top?

Re: Thierno Barry
Well I mean he's playing badly and looks down so you're not going to see a lot of positives.
We have to persist I think, or the investment is dead after what..2 starts is it?
Players take time. Patience is rewarded.

Re: Thierno Barry
Playing him constantly when he's miles off ready will damage his development more than giving him 20 mins off the bench most weeks.
I hate both options tbh but Beto is still the superior player, he has had spells of looking like a decent player but I think we just have to accept the long spells in-between where he is absolute garbage.
Just playing Barry regardless of his impact isn't doing him any favours.

Agree with this, we're once again not playing to the strength of our strikers.StirlingBlue wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 12:22 pm I'll repost my comment from the Moyes thread as I think it's relevent to the discussion on Barry:

He made a few good runs yesterday and came looking for the ball a number of times, but outside of Garners great delivery (where he still had lots to do) most of the time we moved the ball way to slowly or didn't even see the movement.
My biggest complaint yesterday was the 1vs1 situation with their centre half, we have to see more from him there.

Beto thrives in chaos, thrives in space. He can be a great option off the bench. He can't lead a line. He's 28 and can't do it. He'll be leaving the club in the summer, why persist?
Barry will not develop on the bench. Doesn't matter what your argument is, he goes nowhere on the bench.
Play him and develop him.
I'm not saying 100% of the time play him and never sub him and never drop gim. Obv caveat is the manager will know when to pull him out. But we have to find a way to get him minutes to develop him, for him and us.
Re: Thierno Barry
You can't just continue playing someone who is miles off ready and expect them to develop, it can very very easily have the complete opposite effect.brap2 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 12:57 pm The difference is game state.

I've made no bones about my issues with Beto, but he has at points played and led the line well, and scored goals.
He's also fucking awful in games and there's no correlation, like for example he bullied Liverpool's back line last season in a way Barry couldn't do but then was in their pocket all game this year... It's infuriating but he is capable, whereas Barry clearly isn't.
Just hanging some kid out to dry every week who can't adapt and is not involved at all in the games doesn't help them, it's not how you take a young player from abroad and develop them. Doing it will more than likely cause much more harm then good.

Re: Thierno Barry
Barry has shown so little that it's unlikely to be remedied by just giving him game time.
Re: Thierno Barry
You're taking extremes to prove your point tbh, but yep fine play some fella we're going to sell at a loss in 6 months time anyway for the sake of a few more points, start again in yhe summer.AjaxAndy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 2:01 pm You can't just continue playing someone who is miles off ready and expect them to develop, it can very very easily have the complete opposite effect.

Maybe we'll be able to afford and attract that ready now but also sub 26 year old star striker everyone on the planet wants.
Re: Thierno Barry
Barry off the bench for me. If we're trailing then we'll be pushing for a winner which will help him be involved and if we're winning then there should be opportunities with more space.
Beto has been woeful from the start this season but I think starting Barry does more damage to the lad than good at the moment.

That was as bad as it gets from Barry yesterday. You can’t persist if that’s what he’s going to contribute.
