Boring boring Premier League

Post

I don't watch Liverpool matches, so good chance I missed one of the few good matches this weekend but overall I thought that was pretty crap. Villa v Newcastle where there was barely a chance, let alone a goal. Chelsea v Palace which wasn't too dissimilar. Then there was United v Arsenal where the latter just ruin the game and the only thing that stopped that being a 0-0 was a terrible bit of goalkeeping. Then it finishes off another match bailed out by a poor decision (or at least controversial one) in our game that prevents it from being a 0-0.

Thought there were a lot of poor quality matches this weekend, probably reflects the way the game is at the moment.

The first 3 games seen to be played at friendly levels

Then after the farce of the international break the season tends to begin for real

I totally agree that this week's games were in general.... Wank

The current thought process with a lot of teams is that you can't be countered if you don't give the ball away, and if you do you're set up in a way that stops the opposition doing so.

Pep's philosophy has turned a fast paced league in to a game of chess with his disciples and followers holding jobs at several clubs and creating a really boring product as a result.

It's probably why Spurs will be a decent watch under Thomas Frank as he's a bit of an outlier in how he sets up and plays.

I'll be really happy when this cycle of tactics and style goes out of fashion as it's fucking awful to watch.

Football is crap. Probably lucky if you get 3 good games out of 10 each weekend

Said it a few times last season, the PL is pretty boring these days. The likes of Pep have ruined it, tries to re-invent the wheel all the time, you even get non league teams trying to play it out from the back and play possession football, not many hungover plumbers can carry it off though. Too much money means too many teams play not to lose rather than try and win so one team has all the ball while the other sits deep and defends for their life and are happy to leave with a 1-0 defeat. It's what made Bielsa fun to watch, it was suicidal football but at least it entertained.

Slightly off topic as it's not just the PL but all the new phrases in football can fuck off too, low block, high press, transition, pivots, double pivots, inverted this, false that, and that's before we get on to XG etc, get, to, fuck. :)

low block = sit deep
high press = close down
transition = win ball back
pivots = two in midfield
double pivots = four in midfield
inverted this = when the tip of the penis sits inside the body while flaccid
false that = 95% of Liverpool fans

Quite an interesting read in the decline of the "open play goal" and how many more and now scored from set pieces.

Yes, what has happened to free flowing attacking football.

This, even in a season largely without the technical wizardry of Ward Prowse...

No, I don't want him here.

Watching a few of the old 'goal of the month' videos recently, and it made me realise just how risk averse football is nowadays. I think Gana must be the only player you can count on having at least 1 random shot from outside the box every game.

Give me a Tony Yeboah or a Paul Scholes regen you cowards!

Yeah there's much less long range goals, I think it's because most coaches tell their players not to shoot from outside the box as the % chance of scoring is much lower than shots from closer range. I think I read that Thomas Frank has explicitly banned shots from outside the box at Brentford, although Richarlison obviously ignored that yesterday if it's something he still preaches.

The other thing that I miss from football past is through balls, and strikers one-on-one with the keeper as a result. Seems to be something that's very rare these days. Linked to that, I miss it when strikers used to round the keeper to score - another lost art.
