VAR and is there a way to fix it?

Watching a pretty good game between Middlesborough and Ipswich and it's easy to forget how crap decisions were before VAR too.

Assistant referee behind the action calling a player though on goal offside when he looked on, basically had to be guessing as there is no way to tell from where he was to call offside with any confidence. I didn't see a replay but one of the goals given looked offside in the buildup, and there were some dubious penalty decisions too.

Absolutely. I think var should be a massive positive and stop the big sides getting favourable decisions. Unfortunately it's being used to search for excuses to give the big sides them favourable decisions

Looked up the margin of error under VAR

"VAR offside decisions have a margin of error due to technology limitations (camera angles, pixelation, frame rates), leading to a small spatial uncertainty (potentially 10-30cm or more in older systems). To address this, leagues like the Premier League introduced a 5cm tolerance (giving attackers the benefit of the doubt) and now use semi-automated technology to reduce errors, but the core challenge remains the interpretation of "clear and obvious" and the precise moment of ball contact in blurry images."

I was really suprised at the margin of error of up to 30 cms "or more with older systems". Thats wider than the average footballer's torso! When you see VAR decisions have you ever seen an attatcker shown offside by <5cm and the goal allowed? Frame rate is also a big issue, in terms of when you freeze the view.

Based on this level of inaccuracy, if correct, I would prefer it if they gave some authority back to the lino and go with their onfield decision if its within the margin of error, like cricket.

They big ones don’t, they ditched the margin of error when the semi-automated system started being used, the EPL were the only ones that kept it (for obvious dubious reasons)

The offside thing is shocking. Its a pain in the arse stuff being pulled back for offsides from var but was willing to accept it because I assumed it was always right.

Also the margin of error thing doesn't really would. If it can be 30cm out I assume either way then infact someone could now be 35cm offside and still be given on.

Im not sure why the benefit of doubt would be given to anyone if the margin of error can go either way

Exactly!
The wording they used at the start and continue to use now, it will only be used for clear and obvious mistakes.
If you can't tell by looking at clip with the naked eye that the official has made an error, then it's not clear and obvious.
If you have to draw lines on the pitch or use technology then it's not a clear and obvious mistake.
Let's be honest it's gone the way a lot of us thought it would, they wouldn't be able to stop themselves getting involved in everything.
It's been an abomination not helped by appalling officials who weekly embarrass themselves

Yeah, the way to fix it is to have the match official be signaled from the VAR team to have a quick second look at an incident.

If it’s not obvious, the original call stands. That way it is purely about fixing obvious bad decisions or picking up things the officials missed like a stamp or some other unnecessary contact that can happen away from the ball.

The current version leads to all sorts of hair-splitting about grey areas of the rules, grey areas different officials interpret differently. Kills the flow of the match and often times makes things feel unfair (e.g. that was given against us easier this season but isn’t being given now).

This would also do away with the lunacy of the lino seeing what he thinks is an offside, keeping his flag down for thirty seconds while we essentially watch a zombie game knowing if the ball ends up in the net, he's going to flag.
