The fall of Spurs
I must admit, I don’t follow Spurs closely and today was the first time I watched them in a while. But how on earth have they declined so rapidly especially in the last two seasons?
Before then they were a very comfortable top half team and not too long ago were a top 4 side season after season. But now they seem almost in the same position we were in about 3-4 years ago - except they’ve not been hindered so much in terms of PSR or financial restrictions.
Is it that:
- They’ve not been able to replace key players like Kane and Son?
- They’ve bought too many duds? (It almost feels like a long time since they’ve bought top quality players that clubs such as Real Madrid or Barcelona would want).
- The wrong type of managers being brought in to manage the team and bringing different profiles of players that have failed to gel.
- Some off field issues impacting the team. I know Daniel Levy is not there anymore, is he a big loss, even if he was an unpopular character?
Could be a combination of the above, but it’s still incredible they’ve declined so badly after a couple of decades of very strong top half table finishes (with the very odd exceptions).

Re: The fall of Spurs
I always think Spurs sign to many players from lower table clubs. The likes of Bissouma, Solanke, Maddison, Richarlison, Johnson, Odobert, Palhinha, Kudus. They're good players and stood out in England in lower pressure environments but are they the players you sign when you want to get to the next level? Eventually if you keep signing players from midtable teams then you risk slipping back there yourself.
Combine that with poor managerial appointments (Postecoglou was a joke, trophy or not) and other poor signings made where there is no clear consistent direction then there's always the risk that you go down.
Injuries have been a factor as well but all teams get injuries.

Re: The fall of Spurs
I think it’s just the perfect storm of:
- spending to maintain profitability while other clubs are maxing out their resources to compete at as high a level as possible
- a sequence of poor managerial appointments and the subsequent lack of direction that creates
- signing players based almost entirely on talent and not worrying about personalities for the dressing room
- injuries
But they are in deep shit. They have by far the most apathetic group of players of the teams in the relegation battle. Check the video of Van de Ven ignoring Tudor when he urged him to push up last weekend. He’s already checked out, he doesn’t give a fuck at all, and he’s not the only one with his eyes on the exit.

Re: The fall of Spurs
He has his shortcomings and also benefitted massively from the setup at Brentford but I still believe Frank is a capable manager and it speaks to what a bunch of bad dickheads they have in that squad that he couldn’t squeeze anything out of them.
Re: The fall of Spurs
It proves what can happen with poor manager choices - five managers in five years and some poor signings. We’ve been there ourselves but it proves how absolutely crucial it is for us to make the right choice when Moyes’ time is up

Re: The fall of Spurs
They've won 12 points from their last 20 games. It feels like they are going down now
As for what's gone wrong. Its a bit of everything. Poor signings, poor management choices, team with no real character or fight in it. Feels like they've got an incredibly entitled bunch who openly cant be bothered for 2 managers in a row

Re: The fall of Spurs
The warning signs were there early on for Frank when Van De Ven and Spence blanked him as they were walking off the pitch after a match.
Clearly a bunch of players who are in it for themselves and refuse to listen to a coach. No doubt in my mind Frank is a really good coach, but I also think he is too nice for a bunch like that and the indiscipline spread without him getting a handle on it.
Now it's too late as they've checked out, and as others have mentioned the crowd aren't with them, unlike us when we were in dire straits, so it's just created this wholely toxic situation that seems impossible to turn around.
Unless a miracle happens they're down, can't see any way out of it for them.

Re: The fall of Spurs
They look rotten but they dont need a miracle to stay up. They have about a 36% chance of being relegated
Re: The fall of Spurs
They've just got no identity as a team, certainly this season and even under Ange despite his obvious tactical uniqueness. No idea what they're trying to be, or what type of player they are trying to sign - just seems totally haphazard and then the injuries expose it all. Players like Xavi Simons who are obviously talented but don't appear to be cut out for PL football at all - where's the proper scouting there?
Add to that the fact they seem to have managed to build a squad with next to no leadership and character, full of players who think they can do what they want rather than play to the manager's instructions.
Strangely I think they'll stay up as much as I'd love them to go down. I've not looked at the run in fixtures for the clubs involved but I think Leeds could be the team to go - they've had their good run but it seems to have stopped already and they're slipping back in. I reckon Spurs for all their lack of fight may actually get a couple of unexpected wins during the run in and do enough to keep themselves up, despite being in the worst form out of everyone at the moment. Might just be me wanting them to go down and thinking it probably won't happen though.

Re: The fall of Spurs
What a season this could be for Arsenal fans. Potential League Winners and your most hated rivals getting relegated.
Re: The fall of Spurs
I think they’re going down and have thought so for a while.
The squad of players they have to pick from isn’t good enough for what they need.
They’ve had thirteen players since Christmas, their two centre halves who are their only fit, good players, seemed to have phoned it in, and they have to play champions league in the middle of all of it.
Even if they go out in the next round, playing a team like athletico twice in the middle of a relegation battle with a depleted squad is a nightmare.

Re: The fall of Spurs
If I’m in trouble because my players don’t care enough, I’m starting Richarlison every match. Kind of odd to be bringing him off the bench.
I know he’s broken down a bit physically since he left but he always gives a fuck. They need that energy.
