Will be interesting to see if the deal is actually a straight swap or not.

The Premier League will only sanction the deal if it's deemed 'fair market value'. Given we accepted £20m for McNeil from the same club in January, and they paid £35m for Johnson a year ago, I wouldn't be surprised if there's something like a £5m additional payment from us.

Each deal is seen as a separate one, so technically it's not a swap, it's 2 individual transfers.

Even if we do end up paying £5m, over the course of a 4 or 5 year contract it's basically nothing so not an issue.

It’s a deal that suits both clubs for their needs.

Johnson has had a poor patch of form and McNeil wanted a new start with a club that values what he brings.

More of these kind of deals should be done but then it’s negotiating a value on each of the players that the club agrees with. Feels like we have got a bit of a bargain if we can get Johnson playing to his ability, but McNeil is a less risky option.

Considering the amount of long balls we play pace is definitely needed also a good quality in a player for pressing

A club having to essentially jettison a player to comply is ridiculous, essentially when you see what Chelsea have done this window.

Buying a talented player at a low ebb in his career is a perfectly valid player trading strategy.

I would agree that we do a poor job targeting talent outside of the English football system. But largely, I think we’re doing well at targeting players at prices we can extract value from within our relatively small cone of scouting knowledge.

I think this is precisely what is happening.

I think that once we get a solid squad core that Moyes can trust and is happy with we can be a little more expressive in the transfer market. Taking a bit more risk.
