Sure but Bairnes and Coleman were tup there with the best in the premier league. He kept choosing to play O’Brien there, Keane at centre back and not going with Patterson, despite it working. That’s the stubbornness that deserves to be punished with the sack if he starts with that in a few weeks.superpull wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2026 12:06 pm Bloody hell, i'm no Moyes fan - but the level of amnesia and delusion in here is off the charts.
I saw somebody saying Moyes doesn't liek attacking fullbacks the other day. Like Baines and Coleman didnt exist
Or that he doesnt trust youth. Despite giving starts to Rooney, Baxter, Vaughan, Rodwell, Barkley and Anichebe. They all got plenty of time after their debuts (Didnt he play an 18 year old Januzaj in the champs league?)
I do agree he will almost always settle for a point though haha
David Moyes

Re: David Moyes
Also Baines and Coleman both had to wait a long time on the sidelines while more 'defensive' options were used ahead of them. Luckily they had the loyalty to stick around until their time came.

Re: David Moyes
Turned out OK for them, and us, overall though. A combined 30 seasons between them - not many fullbacks can claim that, even if Coleman's last 5 were as an OAP.

Oh yeah - just hope the same approach works with Dibling and AznouCods wrote: Turned out OK for them, and us, overall though. A combined 30 seasons between them - not many fullbacks can claim that, even if Coleman's last 5 were as an OAP.

Well they're certainly both young enough to go that long, and posess enough skill at a young age. Think they'll do fine.
Re: David Moyes
He fucked Coleman off on loan to Blackpool first though, then played him as a makeshift winger for a while before he would even consider trusting him as our regular 1st choice right back.superpull wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2026 12:06 pm Bloody hell, i'm no Moyes fan - but the level of amnesia and delusion in here is off the charts.

Baines was here for quite some time before getting his opportunity too. I remember him utilising Lescott as a left back whilst Baines sat on the bench.
Moyes will always go safety first. Many of the successes that he has had, he's stumbled upon when backs were to the wall and the squad decimated with injuries, leaving him with no other option but to put a youngun in. Accept it, Moyes is set in his ways and will always pick experience over exuberant youth until his hands are tied.
Re: David Moyes
Or, they weren't ready when they first came in from Wigan and some Irish farmers league?
Everyone also seems to have forgotten that it normally takes players a year to settle when they're not established stars (or, well, very decent like KDH and Garner)
Look at what people are saying about Barry and Dibling this preseason. Aznou is going through the typical "not playing so better than people remember". He'd be hated if he played and made mistakes, people would be demanding Myko back.
There are many, many faults with Moyes. Protecting kids and playing them when they're ready isn't on the list

Re: David Moyes
I dunno.
Baines was fully ready when he came in but we did already have some good options there.
I definitely remember frustration over Coleman not playing over Hibbert and it seemed to take Martinez to get the best out of him at right back.
Same with Barkley. Picking Phil Neville in the middle of the park over him was poor.
Soon as Martinez came in Barkley looked more than ready.
He’s definitely over cautious when it comes to young, attacking like players.
He’s just a cautious manager overall and it always ends up costing him in the end.

Re: David Moyes
The point is none of us really know what Moyes is doing behind the scenes that turns these kids with splinters, into successes.74Blue wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2026 5:43 pm He fucked Coleman off on loan to Blackpool first though, then played him as a makeshift winger for a while before he would even consider trusting him as our regular 1st choice right back.

I don't think it's just luck. (Even though Baines was an Irvine pick initially).
There's something to be said about biding ones time and to displace the incumbent you need to be faster/ stronger / aware / team focused / drilled, or whatever to make the sum of those parts more helpful to the team than the incumbent.
Not many of the Coleman's & Baines et al fall out of the team once they've displaced the likes of the Lescott's. (Lescott himself moving to his preferred position with Yobo's injury).
Moyes wants players who can stick it out and have the desire to make a position their own, doesn't award freebies instantly to the new kids on the block. Might explain how his teams have a bit more about them in graft and grit and longevity, if we perhaps couldn't afford the skill.
Those with splinters or starting out of position generally got testimonial length careers or big money moves. Without Moyes I'm not sure those outcomes happen quite the same.

They've got a promising young RB at Burnley who was on Man City and Tottenham books at one pointweimaranerblues wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2026 3:34 pm At the Burnley V West hame game , which dross is he looking at
