Definitely could have sold Sigurdsson for the £20m that we've been punished going over with.
Absolutely, if we’d done a Greenwood with him we’d be home and dry.
Apparently we argued we lost £10m from not being able to sell Sig and they said the figure was fanciful.

Pretty sure we'd have got way more than £10m for him given we were about to sell him to a club in Saudi if the rumours at the time were true.

So if we appeal this will rumble on and there's potential for any final sanction to actually be applied next season I'd imagine.

So is it better to just suck it up and take the 10 points now seeing as we are unlikely to be relegated even with the punishment?

I'd be half inclined to just take it and move on, but I suppose the hope is we get it reduced and still applied to this season.

They have stated that the result of the appeal will not be given before the end of the season but that it will apply to this season so nothing to lose really.

Is there a source to that or just general reading between the lines?

As before though, where would any of that stop?

Source? How can they not decide by the end of the season? That'd be insane.

Yeah that would be nuts. Imagine we went down and then they reduced it and stayed up? (Not that they seem to want to do us any favours)

Widely reported in many media

CAN EVERTON APPEAL THE SANCTION?

Yes, and they intend to do so. The appeal, per The Guardian, will be heard before the end of the season. If it is successful, there is the potential of the 10 points being reinstated.

However, the ruling has had wider implications and could lead to legal action from other clubs, notably Leicester City and Burnley, who could be paid up to £300m in compensation. They have a month to submit such a request if they do want to seek compensation. Both the Foxes and the Clarets have been relegated in recent seasons, while Everton survived.

Doesn't that say the opposite of what you've said? The appeal "will be heard before the end of the season"

If we accept it are we more liable to action from Leicester, Leeds and Burnley as we'd be seen as admitting wrong doing.
When West Ham got found out over Tevez they ended up settling out of court with Sheffield United for United's relegation. That was on top of a PL fine.

Still don’t see how anyone can sue us. All clubs are a part of the PL and are bound by the rules of the governing body - who have decided on our punishment. They surely have to abide by the governing body’s decision?

If their argument is that the punishment has been handed out too late, which led to them being relegated and not us, thats not Everton’s fault, it’s on the PL. so if there’s a case for suing anyone, it’s surely the PL they should go after

Listening to the BBC football daily podcast and they said it was the PL who were pushing for 12 points and the commission who came to the 10 pts ruling.

I sort of can't believe they were trying to push for even more. Fuckers.

This is a good summary thread of the findings, with some consideration of what a more "fair" punishment might look like:

Trying to make an example of us so they can state they're clamping down on infringements, they look forceful in the public eye and then when they clear City and Chelsea of any wrongdoing they can say 'well if they'd done anything wrong we'd have definitely penalised them because we did to Everton'.

Would be less ridiculous if we couldn't all see how this will play out, it's just so blatantly obvious.
