Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Caicedo cost Brighton 4m. Us and utd passed because the paperwork was too difficult apparently
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
We got DCL and Branthwaite for less than that combined.777Kidnappings wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 6:50 am Caicedo cost Brighton 4m. Us and utd passed because the paperwork was too difficult apparently
Not saying we're the masters of sensible business, but we have bought cheap players who've gone on to be worth far more than we bought them for.
The issue is we don't have the luxury of waiting for a player to develop, it's too much of a gamble. We just need to be a solid dependable premier league 12th-17th placed team and transfers need to reflect that for the next 12 months or so.
If we ever get on top of PSR then the model needs to change accordingly, however it won't do so if we gamble and get relegated as then we fall in to a horrendous chasm of financial Armageddon

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Yeah I was more commenting on the fact people were saying he'd cost 25m. Obviously we can't just buy a load of cheap South Americans. I do think paying big wages for players that have fallen well short at big teams isn't the way to go either. Especially given how poorly Phillips did at West hamAjaxAndy wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 7:46 am We got DCL and Branthwaite for less than that combined.

I thought he was cheaper but I checked here, which suggested otherwise. Maybe they've included a sell on % in this as a total fee or something.777Kidnappings wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 6:50 am Caicedo cost Brighton 4m. Us and utd passed because the paperwork was too difficult apparently

I think we do have the luxury of waiting for a player to develop, if we buy them at the right time and for the right fee.AjaxAndy wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 7:46 am We got DCL and Branthwaite for less than that combined.

DCL and Branthwaite were something like £3m in total. DCL came through more quickly, but when you're spending so little, you have the time to do what we did with Branthwaite and bring him through.
You don't have the luxury when you spend £15m on a Portuguese u21 who is the same game time away from being a first team player.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Yeah although I'm advocating bringing in Philips it'd only be if the wages were sensible and no loan fee.777Kidnappings wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 8:03 am Yeah I was more commenting on the fact people were saying he'd cost 25m. If it were £75k wages and no loan fee I think that'd be the max I'd say was worth pursuing. You'd be essentially swapping Philips for Gomes with about £50k a week spare.
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Yeah definitely agree, I don't feel buying that type of player for that fee with the expectation they won't contribute for a while is much of a gamble... My concern would more be taking punts on players in the hope rather than expectation they could contribute enough straight away.cassius wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 8:08 am I think we do have the luxury of waiting for a player to develop, if we buy them at the right time and for the right fee.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
If you get Philips fit and firing in a system that suits him, he will be fantastic. He always performed well for Leeds and England, and he was just a bit unfortunate with the City move in that he has one of the best (if not the best) players in the world in his position ahead of him in Rodri.
Not sure what happened to him at West Ham. Perhaps they didn’t really need him either, and so he never really got a chance to get fit enough. Moyes likes to play the same team week in week out and if he doesn’t quite trust you, then it’s game over.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
Someone made a very good point earlier, if we get him, get him in for Dyche's pre season
Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
We're still bringing in the Chermiti's, Pattersons, Branthwaites, Nkounkou's of the world.
It's not like we're *not* taking gambles on potwntial and hoping to make money off them.

Re: Kalvin Philips On Loan
No excuses for me for a professional athlete not being fully fit or fit enough to play for pep I don’t mind the idea of him coming in but it’s his motivation I would worry about
