Not saying we're the masters of sensible business, but we have bought cheap players who've gone on to be worth far more than we bought them for.

The issue is we don't have the luxury of waiting for a player to develop, it's too much of a gamble. We just need to be a solid dependable premier league 12th-17th placed team and transfers need to reflect that for the next 12 months or so.

If we ever get on top of PSR then the model needs to change accordingly, however it won't do so if we gamble and get relegated as then we fall in to a horrendous chasm of financial Armageddon

Yeah I was more commenting on the fact people were saying he'd cost 25m. Obviously we can't just buy a load of cheap South Americans. I do think paying big wages for players that have fallen well short at big teams isn't the way to go either. Especially given how poorly Phillips did at West ham

Yeah although I'm advocating bringing in Philips it'd only be if the wages were sensible and no loan fee.

If it were £75k wages and no loan fee I think that'd be the max I'd say was worth pursuing. You'd be essentially swapping Philips for Gomes with about £50k a week spare.

Yeah definitely agree, I don't feel buying that type of player for that fee with the expectation they won't contribute for a while is much of a gamble... My concern would more be taking punts on players in the hope rather than expectation they could contribute enough straight away.

If you get Philips fit and firing in a system that suits him, he will be fantastic. He always performed well for Leeds and England, and he was just a bit unfortunate with the City move in that he has one of the best (if not the best) players in the world in his position ahead of him in Rodri.

Not sure what happened to him at West Ham. Perhaps they didn’t really need him either, and so he never really got a chance to get fit enough. Moyes likes to play the same team week in week out and if he doesn’t quite trust you, then it’s game over.

It's not like we're *not* taking gambles on potwntial and hoping to make money off them.
