Re: Jake O'Brien
Also he's right. We can't be spending 15m on a 4th choice player the manager doesn't fancy (for whatever reason), with so many areas of the team looking deficient.

We've done it repeatedly. Beto, chermitti. Couple of players on loan too. Players who not only aren't ready now but might never be. It's all very odd. Think our dof has gotten off extremely lightly
Re: Jake O'Brien
The fact that we paid John Textors Lyon £15m for him at a time when Textor felt that he had some sort of influence over us is rather suspect ?Bluedylan1 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 10:45 am Also he's right. Re: Jake O'Brien
I think there are some reasons, mainly around low risk and finances, rather than actual minutes. These and the Textor rumours which would actually seem likely close to the mark.Bluedylan1 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 10:45 am Also he's right. Player trading, he's unlikely to be sold for anything under what we paid for him, and I dont think he'd have been sold elsewhere for that. And he might come good.
No one has so far come up with (m)any better viable alternatives to many of our positions of need, much criticism, few actual ideas. (Although to Kerryblueboys credit I believe he did highlight Wharton, pre-Palace, if we have had a chance with him who knows.
He's a safety in case of an injury crisis, Two CBs down and so are we. Relegation would eclipse the 15m, a small fee for a player these days, especially one that has apparently done well elsewhere. Chalobah rated at 35m+ for comparison.
Re: Jake O'Brien
I mean this is coming from the guy who has posted about McNeil playing in the 10 instead of Ndaiye 100,000 times in the past 3 days
Re: Jake O'Brien
Surely by definition a 4th choice CB won't be fancied by the manager over the other 3 choices?Bluedylan1 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 10:45 am Also he's right. Unless you think we could sign a 4th choice CB for free and use the money elsewhere, without that player being high sign on fee and wages? Because that's quite an unlikely scenario.
£15m for a 4th choice CB Vs just playing Holgate there if we pick up a couple of injuries? I know which I'd choose.
I'd imagine there was some thought around if Branthwaite left late in the window we needed to cover our arses so as not to be starting the season with just 2 CBs too.
Whichever way we spent that £15m we'd be deficient in some area, or really multiple so I'm sure we'd all be complaining whatever happened with it.
Re: Jake O'Brien
Fine line between buying players for a manager and buying players for the future though tbf. Chermiti and O'Brien are both good long-term signings. Same with Patterson and Mykolenko. Pointless if you then hire a manager or two that isn't aligned with that/doesn't have a long-term future at the club.777Kidnappings wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 11:10 am We've done it repeatedly. Re: Jake O'Brien
The ongoing mental gymnastics are really something to behold. There are some on here who could find Dyche in bed with their wife and still find a way to justify it.
''He was just very tired and needed a place to lie down. My marital bed is as good a place as any. Don't you get tired sometimes?''
''My wife's been really tense lately, and it's actually done a lot to help her mood and strengthen our relationship in the longterm''

You've become very good at making flippant posts without any real argument lately. I get you're frustrated but also what's the point in getting involved in a debate when you're not making any actual point?Bluedylan1 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 12:26 pm The ongoing mental gymnastics are really something to behold. I mean I think I made a point. You might not like it, or how I made it, but it's a fairly obvious one.
Re: Jake O'Brien
Your 'point' is the defence of Dyche with regards the O'Brien signing.Bluedylan1 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 12:34 pm I mean I think I made a point. You might not like it, or how I made it, but it's a fairly obvious one.
However the conspiracy theory is Dyche did want him and it was forced on him.
Or are you arguing we should have not signed a CB and used Holgate when needed and potentially have lost Branthwaite at the end of the window and lined up with Keane and Tarks as our 2 starting CBs? Again recruitment is Thelwell's department so Dyche banging my wife seems to have very little validity here.
Or do you think we should be playing him over Keane despite Keane playing well and JOB looking out of his depth when he's played? Well yes that'd be on Dyche but doesn't seem to be much of a valid argument.
So no your point about 'mental gymnastics' doesn't seem to have much or a point at all with regards what we're talking about. I'm glad you think it's clear but unfortunately for you it's not.

Re: Jake O'Brien
The point isn't even about Dyche. It's about you performing mental gymnastics to bore everybody into submission with versions of the same things over and over again all season long (it feels like longer!) and positioning yourself weirdly as the voice of reason, ''fighting the good fight'' as you said the other day.AjaxAndy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 12:41 pm Your 'point' is the defence of Dyche with regards the O'Brien signing.

I'm quite sure you're a nice fella in person.
