Re: January transfer window
I’d still like us to sign Alfie Doughty.

Re: January transfer window
Not advocating getting him but I honestly think our attaching options are so dire that a Dan James would revolutionise our attack. Brain dead, pacey forward who has 1 good game in 4 will do for starters.
Re: January transfer window
That’s a terrible shout.
Our lack of threat on the counter is more to do with set up and coaching than it is any lack of pace.
Harrison, Lindstrom and nydyiae are all quick enough, they’re just always picking the ball up 70 yards from goal and expected to carry it up the pitch.
That and hitting it long to Dom at the first opportunity are our only ways of countering.
Don’t think I ever see us putting the ball in behind the defence.

It all comes back to the set up.TheRam wrote: Don’t think I ever see us putting the ball in behind the defence.
We defend with eleven men so our wingers are often back with our fullbacks - by the time they’re up the pitch the opposition has recovered and is no longer open to a counter.
Look how high and wide good sides keep their wingers out of possession
Re: January transfer window
Haven't seen much evidence of Harrison having much pace like, can probably count how often he's beat a man on one hand since he got here. Ndiaye and Lindstrom do have pace though even if they're not absolutely rapid. I think Dom has lost a good chunk of the pace he once had, though maybe that's a mental thing to avoid injuries.

Re: January transfer window
I’d have Harrison down as faster than Ndiaye tbh, Ndiaye beats people with skill not pace and then he just uses his body well to stay in front of them and often draws a foulShogun wrote:Haven't seen much evidence of Harrison having much pace like, can probably count how often he's beat a man on one hand since he got here. Re: January transfer window
I think our set up is partially down to the lack of pace, bit of a chicken and egg argument really.
Young has no pace, neither does Mykolenko so the wide attackers have to not let them be isolated meaning they don't play as attackers and more wide midfielders. This wouldn't be quite so bad if they themselves had pace as they could still get forward more and back in time, but they don't. None of them are quick, and whilst Ndaiye, Harrison and Lindstrom aren't as sluggish as McNeil they're still only average paced at best.
But the main issue is you can't leave the full backs isolated because they're a massive weakness due to their lack of pace, especially Young. Also Young is Tarkowski's side of defence too which further exacerbates the issue because now you have a pair of players you can't leave isolated because neither has any pace.
It's something teams will try and target and we've largely negated due to the tactics employed, but the obvious downside is that this means we have very little going forward because everything is designed to protect our weaknesses and not to expose the opposition's.
The set up and the lack of pace go very much hand in hand. The only real solution would be to play Patterson instead of Young but this is another issue rather than a solution given no manager has trusted Patterson which would suggest he's not good enough to play.
We need two new full backs and a right winger, all need more pace ideally a lot more than the current incumbents, but I doubt that'll happen until the summer, and by then we'll have a new manager and completely different and hopefully more easy on the eye set up.

Re: January transfer window
I mean, we've brought in enough players in the last 2 years for the tactics not to be dictated by the lack of pace in the team if that is the case.

Re: January transfer window
But we didn't buy anyone with any pace, nor did we buy any new full backs.
It doesn't matter how many players you buy if you fail to buy players that address the clear issues in the squad.
